The Västgötal Trail is signposted with red signs along the road

It may be disputed if Västergötland is Sweden's cradle, but no one can dispute that it is a landscape full of exciting historical monuments. Tombs from the Stone Age, Birger Jarl's hometown and scene of large parts of Jan Guillou's dramatic books about Arn. In addition, the landscape is beautiful, fertile and varied. Here you will find Birger Sjöbergs Vänersborg for those who enjoy shows and at Vänern beach you will find magnificent Läckö castles with opera and other musical experiences.

Of course, you experience the Västgötaleden best by bike and then the extensive Västgötaleden is available with its often very easy-to-cycle small roads. Even more choices for those who want to cycle arise as the Swedish Trail also runs through the area. There are many good starting points for the cycling trip such as Mariestad, Skövde, Skara, Herrljunga, Trollhättan, Borås and usually good signage of the trail. The Swedish Cycling Association has developed the route and set up all signs along the Västgötaleden.

Since the books of the Knights of Arn were published, medieval churches and monastery ruins have revived, with adventurous stories for both old and young. In the middle of Skara and Skövde lies Hornborgasjön, which is widely famous for its annual trend dance. The Västgötal Trail is surrounded by Sweden's two largest lakes Vänern and Vättern, traverses the plains landscape to the west, among the characteristic plateau mountains and through the deep forests of Tivedens and Hökensås with cloudberry ants and clear lakes where the big pockets cry in the evenings.

Main Route: 1140 km (Vätternleden meanders through almost all of Västergötland)
