Kustlinjen is a coastal cycle route that stretches from Öregrund in Uppland to Västervik in Småland. Here you cycle through some of Sweden's most popular archipelago landscapes, with thousands of islands and a rich cultural heritage. The trail covers the archipelagos of Roslagen, Stockholm, Sörmland, Arkösund, St. Anna, Gryt and Tjust.

There are several possible starting and ending points, making the trail flexible to adapt to time and interest. Along the way there are also good opportunities to combine cycling with boat trips, which provides an even richer archipelago experience. The trail is developed and signposted by the Swedish Cycling Society.

Good to know:

  • Between Grimsta and Oaxen, Nynäshamn Tourist Office recommends cycling via Mörkö and taking the free road ferry across Skanssundet. The road to Kagghamra is narrow but scenic, with a farm shop and pub stops along the way.
  • South of Grisslehamn the trail goes along road 283 which can be narrow and busy. A better alternative is Gamla Grisslehamnsvägen (partly gravel but charming) or the road on the east side of Väddö.
  • The road between Norrtälje and Furusund is narrow, with heavy traffic during the summer peak season.

Traffic along certain sections may be heavier during the summer vacation months, especially on major roads. Therefore, plan your bike rides with a little extra caution during peak season.

Bicycle Service and Rental Facilities

Transportation and Travel Options

You can take your bike on the commuter train (SL) during off-peak hours (not between 06:00-09:00 and 15:00-18:00). The SL commuter train runs between Bålsta and Stockholm. In Stockholm, you can get on/off at Odenplan station if you use the Vanadisvägen entrance. Read more here.

Östgötatrafiken (rural buses)
Bicycles may be carried free of charge on rural buses, subject to availability. Not all buses have bicycle hooks, please call customer service on 0771-21 10 10 before you go to find out which bus type runs the trip you want to go on.

Sörmlands traffic
Bicycles are allowed free of charge, subject to availability.
