The northern stages of the Sweden Trail invite you to travel through some of Sweden's most enchanting and scenic landscapes. This stretch of the trail takes you through the eastern parts of northern Sweden with magnificent nature and rich culture. You are in an area that is also characterized by the Sami culture. The Sami are one of the world's indigenous peoples with their own culture, language and traditions.
From Karesuando, wedged on the Swedish-Finnish border, the trail takes you into a powerful landscape of forests, coastlines, stately mountains and towns steeped in history. During the summer months, you will experience the light of the midnight sun. It's a special feeling to be north of the Arctic Circle. Haparanda is a border town where Swedish and Finnish cultures merge.
As the journey continues south, coastal towns such as Piteå and Umeå become exciting stops along the way. Further south, the trail winds through the interior of Västerbotten and the mountains of Jämtland, where you have several opportunities to cycle west into Norway. The Northern Sweden Trail ends in the coastal city of Sundsvall in Medelpad. Here you will find a perfect combination of nature and cultural heritage.
Large parts of the Northern Sweden Trail run along roads with high speeds - up to 100 km/h, but usually the traffic volume is low.
