Seize the opportunity and cycle along one of Sweden's most famous tourist attractions. The Göta Canal is not only one of Sweden's largest engineering feats, it is also a beautiful sight to behold as the bike path winds its way along the water.
In this cycling package, you get to choose how far you want to cycle along the canal, making it a perfect cycling adventure for the whole family, or for those who just want to enjoy a leisurely ride and feel the wind blowing through their hair while admiring the beautiful views. The Göta canal stretches 190 km from Sjötorp, where the adventure begins, to Mem at Slätbaken, with 58 locks to see along the way.
You sleep well at the family-run Sjötorps Vandrarhem & Rum, which is centrally located in Sjötorp and offers newly renovated and nice country-style rooms. Here you have access to a kitchen and TV room. Shower and toilet can be found in the corridor but for 250 SEK/person you can upgrade your room to one with double bed and private bathroom. Free parking is included. Breakfast is served at the Kajutan restaurant and is a tasty way to start the day.

Day 1 - Cycling close to the canal

At Sjötorps cykeluthyrning, just north of the canal bridge, bikes are available for pick-up between 9:00-11:30 am. Cycle alongside the canal on the old towpath where oxen once pulled boats. After about 7 km from Sjötorp, you will arrive at Lyrestad, and after about 10 km, you will reach the Norrkvarn lock area where you can see a part of the Göta Canal built in miniature. If you feel like cycling a little more, it's only 4 km to Hajstorp, one of the real gems of the Göta Canal. Here, you'll find a cozy café and a crafts store in the old warehouse. It's fascinating to watch the boats pass through the lock; the water is released, it roars and rumbles, the boats emerge from the lock or sink down into the lock staircase, and the gates open as the boats glide out so beautifully. In Hajstorp, you can get really close and enjoy an ice cream while watching the spectacle.
In your backpack, you have the delicious lunch package from Maltes fisk och delikatesser, which you can enjoy whenever you like. Once you're back in Sjötorp, you'll receive the keys to your room when returning the bike. In Sjötorp, you can also visit the ice cream kiosk, craft shops, buy smoked fish or visit the canal museum. The beach is not far away, and in the evening, you can enjoy the beautiful sunset over the waters of Lake Vänern if you wish.
After completing your bike tour, you are welcome to the cozy restaurant Kajutan, located right next to the locks of the Göta canal, where you can enjoy a delicious dinner. After your meal, we recommend taking a stroll in Sjötorp to see all the beautiful boats moored there.
Day 2 - Breakfast and return journey

Following a restful night's sleep, enjoy a peaceful breakfast before it's time to head home.
If you're not in a rush to leave, take the opportunity to visit Surö Beech Forest, a few kilometers from Sjötorp. Classified as a national park and the northernmost beech forest in Europe, it's a great way to prolong your adventure.

The cycling experience was absolutely fantastic with a good packed lunch and a good lunch on return. We stayed at Vassbackens camping. Nice camping but lacked service oriented staff. The commitment and treatment must be better at the campsite.
