RomanticEscape the daily grind and make memories together - romantic cycling packages with cozy accommodation and beautiful surroundings.
Travel by train with Kinnekulletåget and experience a cycling adventure along the picturesque coast of Lake Vänern. The delightful fusion of cycling and train travel offers a cozy and relaxing experience, with numerous attractions to uncover. Highlights include the historic Göta Canal, the majestic Läckö Castle, and the vibrant, flowering mountain of Kinnekulle. The cycling package conveniently starts and ends in Töreboda, a destination easily accessible by train.
You are cycling on historical ground. Lake Vänern was formed around 10 000 years ago after the last ice age. When the ice melted, Sweden was covered by water that created a connection between the Kattegat and the Bothnian Sea. As the land rose, lakes such as Vänern and Vättern were cut off from the sea. The trip goes through a very beautiful and varied natural and cultural landscape. You can rent a bicycle, but we recommend that you bring your own bicycle helmet for the best comfort and safety. You can buy a train ticket in the ToGo app (about SEK 37 per person per day).
”A place among the most remarkable in the kingdom”, wrote the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus about Kinnekulle. ”This place is sweeter than any other”.

Day 1 - Experience 16 locks along the Göta Canal
You start your cycling in Töreboda, perfect for those arriving by train. You follow the car-free gravel road along the Göta Canal and cycle right next to the canal to Lyrestad.
You will cycle past as many as 16 locks before reaching Sjötorp, located on Sweden's largest lake, Lake Vänern. In Sjötorp, overnight accommodation awaits at Pensionat Kajutan, right next to the lock on the Göta Canal. You can have dinner at Restaurant Kajutan or Perssons i Backen.
Day 2 - Bike and train to the pearl of Lake Vänern
After a hearty breakfast you cycle to Lyrestad, only 8 km away. From here you travel with the Kinnekullet train, which has been named Sweden's most beautiful train route. The train takes you to Mariestad, also known as the "Pearl of Lake Vänern". It may be useful to know how things work on the Kinnekullebanan. At the stations there is a round sign that you turn towards the train when you want to get on. When the train has stopped, you turn the sign back to a neutral position. When you want to get off, you press a button, just like on a bus.
You stay at Hotell Vänerport with views of Lake Vänern. The hotel is located in the old town with its picturesque wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. This is one of Sweden's best-preserved old town centers with the tall Domkyrkan dominating the cityscape.
Day 3 - Kinnekulle and Sweden's most beautiful train line
Kick off your day with a mesmerizing train journey along Sweden's most enchanting railway route, stretching between Mariestad and Lidköping. As you marvel at the breathtaking scenery through the train window, you'll pass a series of quaint train stations. The single-track railway seamlessly connects charming villages, cultural landmarks, the glistening waters of Lake Vänern, and various nature reserves.
At Hällekis station you get off the train and pick up your bike. Feel free to make a lunch stop at Hällekis Kök & Trädgårdscafé, which is beautifully located next to Hällekis Säteri. Now a wonderful cycling day awaits on Kinnekulle, the flowering mountain. You cycle parts of the Väner Trail between the small village of Hällekis and the village of Källby. Park your bikes at Källby's small train station and travel with the Kinnekulle train to Lidköping. You end the day with a good dinner and overnight stay at Stadshotellet in Lidköping.
Day 4 - Fabulous Läckö Castle and its enchanting gardens
Today, a bus excursion awaits you to Läckö Castle, situated on a peninsula in Lake Vänern. As one of Sweden's most picturesque castles, Läckö boasts a rich medieval history. Your visit will immerse you in the captivating legacy of the De la Gardie family, while still offering glimpses of its medieval past. During the summer months, the castle hosts a variety of exhibitions spread across the fortified section, the second floor, and the fourth floor.
The Little Castle Garden is an oasis to experience during your visit to the castle. The garden is enchanting with its different levels, colors, shapes and flowers framed by high white stone walls. Here you can walk around for a long time and enjoy the lush and fairytale-like surroundings. When you are satisfied with the day, the bus goes back to the hotel in Lidköping. Here you will spend the night and have dinner at the hotel.
Day 5 - Train ride through Kinnekulle's beautiful landscape
Today you take the Kinnekulletåget train through the beautiful landscape of Kinnekulle. The summer offers a lush greenery and in the autumn you experience the beautiful colors of the deciduous forest. Ancient remains dating back thousands of years show that Kinnekulle was an attractive place to live. The rich cultural landscape is also reflected in the large number of mansions and churches.
Get off at Forshem and Hällekis to discover local attractions and antique shops. Finish with a short bike ride back to Töreboda on car-free roads along the Göta Canal. In the evening, an overnight stay awaits at Pensionat Prästgården.
Day 6 - Lyrestad and the Göta Canal
End the trip with breakfast at Pensionat Prästgården and enjoy the last morning by the Göta Canal before it is time to travel on to your home town.
