Day 1 - Arrival in the coastal gem of Ystad
Ystad is the starting point of the journey and one of Skåne's most well-preserved cities dating back to the Middle Ages. Here you'll find charming half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and squares with a historic atmosphere, all within easy reach of the sea. Stroll through the city center, sit down in a café or discover the wide range of restaurants and small shops.
The town is also internationally known through Kurt Wallander, whose stories have put Ystad on the map for visitors from all over the world.
Overnight at the Continental du Sud, a historic 19th-century hotel in a central location, close to both the station and the city's attractions.
Day 2 - From Ystad to Kåseberga along the sea
Today's stage takes you east along the coast on small, winding roads through an open agricultural landscape. Here you cycle with constant views of the sea, past fields that spread out towards the horizon. The route is relatively flat and easy to cycle, making it a pleasant and enjoyable start to your cycling trip.
The destination for the day is the charming fishing village of Kåseberga, where the marina, smokehouses and genuine atmosphere create a vibrant coastal environment. There is time to sit down and enjoy local flavors straight from the sea.
Above the village awaits Ales Stenar, a 67-meter-long Iron Age shipwreck and one of Sweden's most impressive ancient monuments. From here you get a sweeping view of the Baltic Sea and the surrounding landscape.
Accommodation is at Kåseberga Gårdshotell & Spa, beautifully located just outside the village in a quiet and rural setting.
Day 3 - Coastal cycling to Simrishamn
Today's stage continues along the coast of Österlen through a varied and characteristic landscape. You cycle through open fields, past beach meadows and small communities scattered along the way. The sea is ever-present and provides a peaceful setting for today's ride.
The destination is Simrishamn, one of the region's most vibrant coastal towns with a long history as a fishing village. The harbor is still the heart of the town and is lined with restaurants and cafés where you can sit down and enjoy the atmosphere. In the city center, you'll find colorful houses, cobblestone streets and a charming small-town feel.
Accommodation is at Hotel Svea, beautifully situated by the sea with views of the Baltic Sea.
Day 4 - Towards Kivik and the apple grove landscape
Today's stage takes you further north along the coast. You cycle through an open and varied landscape where the sea follows you on one side and farmland spreads out on the other. The terrain is still relatively easy to cycle, but with elements of soft height differences that provide nice views of the surroundings.
The area around Kivik is known for its apple orchards and its long tradition of fruit production. A popular stop along the way is Kivik's Musteri, where you can learn more about how must and cider are made, and of course take the opportunity to taste local products. Kivik is a classic summer destination, close to long sandy beaches, nature reserves and a vibrant coastal life.
Accommodation is at Kiviks Hotell Konferens och Spa, with a high and beautiful location and views of Hanöbukten.
Day 5 - From coast to hills in Brösarp
Today's stage leaves the coast and takes you into a more hilly and varied landscape. Here, the nature clearly changes, from open sea views to forest areas, pastures and moors. The cycling becomes slightly more challenging, but the reward is a landscape that offers some of Österlen's most characteristic views.
You pass the well-known Brösarps hills, where gently rolling hills spread out in an almost iconic Scanian landscape. The area is part of the Verkeån nature reserve and offers sweeping views of the surrounding farmland. The destination is Brösarp, a small town with strong traditions and proximity to nature.
Accommodation is at Brösarps Gästgifveri & SPA, a classic inn dating back to the 17th century, known for its Scanian food, personal atmosphere and the opportunity to relax in the spa.
Day 6 - Closing in Kristianstad and Vattenriket
The last stage takes you from Brösarp towards Kristianstad through an open and flat landscape. You cycle on smaller roads through farmland that gradually turns into more watery environments, which provides a calm and harmonious end to the journey.
Along the way you pass Kristianstads Vattenrike - one of Sweden's most species-rich natural areas and designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. Here there are good opportunities to experience a rich bird life and unique natural environments that differ from the coastal landscape of the past.
The journey ends in Kristianstad, a city with roots dating back to the 17th century, founded by Christian IV of Denmark. The city center offers a nice selection of restaurants and cafes as well as good communications for further travel home. Overnight stay at Home Hotel Christian IV, centrally located with proximity to the city's offerings and transportation options.
