Cycle to three fabulous villages in Sunne

Cycle through the cultural landscape of Värmland where stories and nature meet. Here the roads wind between beautiful church villages, lakes and forests - in a landscape immortalized by writers such as Selma Lagerlöf and Göran Tunström. Ulvsby Manor, where both lived and drew inspiration, is your base for the stay.

From here you can easily reach the villages Lysvik, Östra Ämtervik and Grassland - three unique gems of art, culture and good food within cycling distance, about 20-25 km away. The bike rides are mostly on quiet country roads that wind through agricultural landscapes, forests and along sparkling lakes. Stop for a swim, a coffee or a spontaneous art meeting along the way - here it is the enjoyment that rules.

All tours start at the manor, which is scenically located on the western shore of Fryken, just 3 km from the center of Sunne. Only a short distance of about 600 meters goes on a more busy road, and here you take it easy and carefully. Bring your own bike or rent a bike for SEK 200 per day. Helmet included, of course.

Day 1 - Cycle to the village of Lysvik - experience art, ice cream and football

Cycle through the center of Sunne and follow the cycle path towards Lysvik. At Björkefors Manor, turn down towards Fryken and continue on the old road that winds beautifully along the lake. In Lysvik you will find a shop, the charming Mormors ice cream parlor and the restaurant Frykens Pärla, perfect for lunch on the pier overlooking the water.

Take the opportunity to visit the village artists - Solveig Nykvist (ceramics) and Margareta Sunnemar (abstract art) - please call in advance. The tour continues through rural nature towards Mallbacken, known for its women's football team. If you're lucky, there will be a training session or match at Strandvallen, where Marta once played. On the way back, there are more art stops, such as Per Pedersen's studio and Galleri Björken in Sunne. Take a break among the shops or have a coffee at the classic City-konditoriet before returning to Ulvsby herrgård.

Day 2 - Cycle to Gräsmark village - see nature, Finnish culture and food culture

Cycle from Ulvsby Manor towards Gräsmark through forests and along the sparkling waters of Lake Rottnen. Stop at Gettjärnsklätten and hike up to the top for magnificent views and unique flora. In the old vicarage is Kalasmakeriet - a charming tavern with homemade food, usually open weekends.

Visit Gräsmark's homestead with buildings from the 17th century, an authentic Finnish smokehouse and a café open in the summer with pastries made from local spelt flour. Here you can also taste classic Värmlandic nävgröt with pork, lingonberries and juniper berries - a real taste journey! The tour continues along the western side of the lake where quiet bays invite you to swim. Pass the ski and bike facility Sunne Ski & Bike, perfect for a break with a view or a little adventure. After the day's cycling, rest, dinner and relaxation await at Ulvsby Manor.

Day 3 - Cycle to Östra Ämtervik - visit Selma Lagerlöf at Mårbacka

Cycle through Sunne and onto the winding country road that leads to Mårbacka - Selma Lagerlöf's childhood home. Here you can learn more about Sweden's first female Nobel Prize winner and member of the Swedish Academy. Take a break with coffee baked according to Selma's own recipes or a light lunch in the farm café.

Continue south towards Södra Ås Konst & Kultur, with ceramics, ochre and art in a natural environment. Stop for a dip in Fryken and then cycle via Östra Ämtervik back towards Ulvsby Manor. On the way you will pass the church mentioned in Lagerlöf's work and where her family grave is located. Stop by Svanviks Handel for coffee or something good before returning to the manor, where dinner and relaxation await by the lake.

Day 4 - Cycle to Rottneros Park and return home

Take the cycle path from the center of Sunne to Rottneros and discover Rottneros Park - a unique world-class sculpture park with over 100 sculptures surrounded by magnificent gardens. Here, the creator put beauty above all, in the middle of the Värmland landscape.

Be inspired by the atmosphere of the park and take the opportunity to enjoy a good coffee in the beautiful surroundings. Then pedal back towards Sunne and Ulvsby Manor, before it's time to round off the cycling adventure and return to your home town.
