Between Karungi and Rusksele, you'll cycle through some of the most magnificent and varied landscapes in northern Sweden. You follow the Baltic coast along the Gulf of Bothnia, which is the northernmost part of the Baltic Sea. As the Gulf of Bothnia receives large amounts of freshwater from several rivers, such as the Lule River, the Torne River and the Kalix River, the salinity is very low, almost brackish or freshwater-like.
As you approach the military town of Boden, you can see the fortresses that point to the strategic importance of the city. Here you can take a break and explore historical monuments, while enjoying local delicacies in one of the city's cozy cafés. Luleå is closer to the coast, but well worth a detour. Gammelstad church town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
You cycle on towards Piteå, a charming coastal town that offers a nature experience, culture, and activities all year round. Sometimes called ”Norrlands Riviera” with one of Sweden's longest sandy beaches. The destination for this stage is Rusksele. Rusksele is located on the beautiful Vindel River, which is one of Sweden's national rivers.
Parts of the Northern Sweden Trail run along high-speed roads, but traffic volumes are usually low.
