This short stage takes you from Karungi to the border town of Haparanda. You cycle along the Torne River on the border between Finland and Sweden, through the open river landscape.

Haparanda and Tornio together form what is often referred to as a 'twin city', where the border between Sweden and Finland is almost invisible in everyday life. People from both sides move freely across the border to work, shop and socialize. Haparanda is a clear example of how borders can act as bridges rather than barriers, with a rich and vibrant culture that reflects both Swedish and Finnish identity. Tornedal Finnish (or Meänkieli) is an important part of the local culture and has deep roots in the area. Meänkieli is a minority language in Sweden and is protected under Swedish law.

Parts of the Northern Sweden Trail run along high-speed roads, but traffic volumes are usually low.
