You may cycle along the Mälardalsleden trail in the varied and fertile landscape in southern Sweden with deciduous trees, farms and enjoy the proximity to water. About 12 kilometers north of Eskilstuna there is a real gem if you are going to stay a night or two. Sundbyholm Castle is located on a promontory by Lake Mälaren. The main building was completed in 1648 and erected on the initiative of the Reverend Admiral Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm. Today it is a modern hotel and conference facility with a fine restaurant and hotel rooms in various buildings in the castle area.
Sundbyholm has all the prerequisites for relaxing and filling the time with experiences. A walk in the castle's surroundings gives many beautiful views, you can go down and look at the guest harbor or go down to the sandy beach and swim. Another attraction that is within cycling and walking distance is the famous Sigurd carving. The carving is from the 11th century and is made on a rock. It illustrates episodes from the Icelandic saga of Sigurd Fafnesbane. In short, the carving is well worth a visit.
Another thing worth knowing about Sundbyholm is that this is where Prince Eugen spent a summer in 1893 and painted his rightly famous oil painting ”The old castle".
The entire castle is a restaurant, banquet hall and breakfast room. There is no accommodation in the castle building itself. In the evening, various dinner menus are served at white tablecloths and lit candles and in the morning a large breakfast buffet is served up to overnight guests. In total, there are 109 hotel rooms with 233 beds at Sundbyholm Castle. There are small double rooms, standard double rooms, junior suites and luxury suites. The standard double rooms are available in smaller buildings as well as in a large brick building from the 1960s, where the rooms were renovated with beautiful fabrics, comfortable beds and fully tiled bathrooms. Sundbyholm is also Nordic Ecolabelled as a proof that the environment is taken into account.
