Southeast of Västerås, near the Strömsholm Canal, lies Strömsholm Marketenteri with Mahognyvillan. The building dates from the early 1800s and, among other things, gave its name to the alcoholic drink “Mahognygroggen,” which contains cognac and lemonade. Nearby is the beautiful Strömsholm Canal with King Karl XV’s lock.
A major attraction in the area is Strömsholm Castle, which was built in 1560 by Gustav Vasa and later inhabited by, among others, Queen Dowager Hedvig Eleonora. Through August, you can take a guided tour of the castle; later in the season, you can enjoy a picnic in the castle grounds and admire the surrounding countryside with its oak trees and beautiful hazel groves. Mahognyvillan is located in an area that has been a center for equine care for centuries, with a riding school, stables, an indoor riding arena, and a veterinary hospital.
Marketenteriet, located in the heart of Strömsholm, has its own bakery where you’ll find fresh bread every day. During the summer, you can enjoy a coffee break at the popular outdoor seating area, which also serves ice cream. You’re welcome to place orders, and the selection includes all kinds of pastries as well as bread for meals. The house specialty is the “Drömtårtan” cake, which has been a staple here for as long as anyone can remember. The rooms have an atmosphere that reflects the building’s age, and you’ll sleep soundly near the oak groves. Frukost is always included in the price.
