Day 1 - From Lake Vättern to the forests of Tiveden
The cycling adventure starts in charming Askersund, at the northern end of Lake Vättern. During the summer, the harbor is buzzing with life. Take a stroll along the quay, enjoy an ice cream and peek into small stalls with local crafts.
You leave the city to the west and cycle on quiet gravel roads through a varied landscape. After about 10 km you reach Kullängsstugan, a well-preserved timber building from the 17th century, a peaceful place that is perfect for a break.
The journey continues through the forests of Tiveden, past farms, villages and small lakes where you can stop for a rest or perhaps a swim. You are now in Sweden's southernmost Finnish forest area, known for its wilderness and rich history. In the afternoon, you'll reach Tivedstorp, where Finnish settlers settled back in the 1600s. Here, charming accommodation in a historic setting and a delicious dinner with a focus on local produce await you.
Day 2 - Tiveden Wilderness and National Park
Today you cycle through the magical forests of Tiveden and past mirror-like lakes. After breakfast, take a packed lunch and cycle about 5 km to Tiveden National Park. On the way, you will pass the dramatic cliffs of Stigmanspass, where travelers used to risk encountering straw robbers.
At the entrance you can take part in the area's nature and choose a hike, for example Stenkällerundan. Then continue cycling along Stora Trehörningen and on to Tived church and Sannerud by Lake Unden.
You return to Tivedstorp along a quiet, winding road through the forest. Dinner awaits, and for those who want, there is the possibility of an evening dip at Vitsand's sandy beach.
Day 3 - Through the forests to Lake Vättern
After breakfast, you leave Tivedstorp and cycle east towards Vättern and Olshammar. Today's stage goes on small roads through the forests of Tiveden, with a strong sense of silence and wilderness.
After a few kilometers, you can make a detour to Dammtorps hembygdsgård, before continuing towards Bosjön and the nature reserve Getaryggen. Here you follow parts of the old pilgrimage trail Munkastigen and pass Johannes kammare, a cave with an exciting history.
At Fagertärn, known for its red water lilies, you can stop for a walk or picnic. From here you have about 11 km left to Olshammar. Once at Vättern, you check in at Olshammarsgården. The evening is rounded off with a good dinner, and there is time to discover the history of the place, from the Birgitta Church to Verner von Heidenstam's birthplace.
Day 4 - Back to Askersund via Stjernsund
After a quiet morning in Olshammar, perhaps with a dip in Lake Vättern, you cycle back towards Askersund. The tour goes on smaller roads with a mixture of gravel and asphalt.
Just before the town, you pass Stjernsund Castle, where you have the opportunity to take a guided tour or stroll in the beautiful park. Down by the water is the castle café, a perfect stop for coffee overlooking Lake Vättern. The last stretch is along a car-free gravel road that follows the water, through open landscapes with a nice view of Askersund. Soon you'll be back in the harbor, with memories of days filled with nature, history and quiet cycling.
