Bergslagen Cycling

The Kvarntorp area is the opposite of wilderness. Human footprints can be seen everywhere. The lakes are old quarries, shale oil production created the hundred meter high hill which today is a sculpture exhibition and downhill arena and many of the fast paths go over old quarries, lime kilns and slag heaps. The cycling here is suitable for most people.

The ever-burning slag heap in Kvarntorp is a remnant of oil shale extraction during World War II. One hundred meters above Närkesslätten rises the smoking, sometimes stinking mound that houses a sculpture exhibition, a lift-mounted downhill facility and a newly opened gelato kiosk with a cruel view. From the mound there are also three flatter trails that take you through a wonderful post-apocalyptic landscape full of history. The trails have a completely different character than many other MTB trails in the area. To end a bike ride in Kvarntorp with a ride up the mound at sunset is mandatory.
