The signposted Mälardalsleden out of Södertälje is not recommended - the signs are old and can be confusing. Follow the digital map instead. Then you pass through the city center and further along pedestrian and cycle paths out of the center. Soon, quiet forest areas await on almost car-free roads for several kilometers.

There is a grocery store at Ekeby. A nice place for a break or swimming is Sundviksbadet. For those who want to stop earlier, there is Vidbynäs farm with the possibility of spending the night. In Turinge is Mångfaldens Hus, a charming café and deli shop. There is also Smedsbygget from the 1680s. At Nykvarn there is another grocery store. After 44 km you pass Café Klaver, which is open on weekends. Then small roads wind through the landscape, lined with red cottages, before the last stretch towards Mariefred goes along the footpath and cycle path.

Once in Mariefred, Gripsholm Castle is the big highlight. This fairytale castle is located on an islet, surrounded by a beautiful green area, and is a fantastic sight. There are several nice places to eat in the town: Slottspaviljongen, Gripsholms Värdshus and Hembygdsmuseet with its cozy café.

Another must-see is the museum railway Östra Södermanlands Järnväg, which has its station in the middle of Mariefred. Enthusiasts keep the old steam locomotive alive and run several tours during the summer along the narrow-gauge track. Here you can join a historic journey with genuine steam trains that are more than 100 years old. The boat S/S Mariefred also departs from the pier during the summer. Approx. 85% asphalt, 15% gravel.
