The Hjälmar Trail runs around Lake Hjälmaren, Sweden's fourth largest lake. The name comes from ancient Swedish and means “the winding lake” or “storm lake”, a reminder of the area's long history. The trail offers a combination of magnificent scenery, cultural environments and historical sites that make cycling both varied and inspiring.
Along the way you will pass several interesting places and attractions. These include the fabulous Stora Sundby Castle, well known for its unique architecture, and Julita Farm and Gardens, an open-air museum and an idyll for those who want to experience Swedish rural history. Medieval towns around Lake Hjälmaren also add an extra dimension to the tour for those who appreciate history and culture.
Cycling along the Hjälmar Trail is mainly on quiet country roads, both asphalt and gravel, which makes the trail accessible to many different types of cyclists. Some shorter stretches are on major roads, but most of the route is quiet and close to nature.
Hjälmarleden is under development. The municipalities are reviewing the route and preparing signage, and the route choices listed here are suggestions. Have you cycled the trail? Please share your tips and experiences here: https://ivlv.me/izy1F
