This tour combines World Heritage sites, nature, and small-scale experiences with the story of Hilma af Klint’s strong connection to Adelsö and Munsö. The bike tour brings together cultural history, art, and the Mälaren landscape, allowing you to explore both the World Heritage Site and the artist Hilma af Klint in a single day.
First up is Hovgården, which, along with Birka, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you’ll find traces of the royal estate from which Birka was governed during the Viking Age, with ancient ruins and a landscape that tell the story of the site’s long history.
Later on the tour, you can visit Hilma af Klint’s studio, a place dedicated to the artist’s life, her work, and her strong connection to Adelsö. She spent a great deal of time here even as a child, and the island’s natural surroundings came to play a major role in her art.

Enjoy a short and scenic boat ride across Lake Mälaren—a wonderful way to start the day. The ferry departs from the Munsö ferry terminal.
This is the island's local convenience store, offering a selection of everyday items, local delicacies, and ready-to-eat meals.
Here you’ll find a beautiful, rural idyll steeped in a rich ancient history. For more than 600 years, Hovgården was a royal estate. From here, the king ruled over the city of Birka on the other side of the bay throughout the Viking Age and into the Middle Ages. Here you’ll find parts of a castle ruin, royal burial mounds, runestones, and Alsnu Farm.

The Adelsö swimming area is located next to the Hovgården World Heritage Site, below the Adelsö sports field. It features both a sandy beach and a swimming pier.

In a small red house next to the church and the Hovgården World Heritage Site, there is a garden café. Here you can enjoy coffee and pastries or a light meal.
Adelsö Church dates back to the early 1100s. Given the site’s great historical significance, it is very likely that the church had a wooden predecessor.

Runstensparken displays ancient runestones as they appeared 1,000 years ago. Experience the runes and ornamentation of the runestones in color. Kalle Runristare’s workshop is located in the park.

Adelsö held a special place in Hilma af Klint’s life. It was here that she spent her summers and holidays as a child and developed the close relationship with nature that would later prove so significant to her artistic career.
You'll be biking in mixed traffic and sharing the road with cars. There is parking available next to the ferry terminal.
