Pershyttan is one of the country's best-preserved miners' villages, with parking, pitches, toilets and water. The area is full of historical memories - from the large waterwheel and the smelter to mines and residential buildings. In summer, you can join guided tours or enjoy a coffee in the charming train café. Your journey along the embankment towards Hjulsjö begins here.
The embankment has a long history. In the 1840s, a canal was first planned, but instead it became a horse track and later a railway that connected Nora with Örebro. Along the route you get a sense of the time when the railway was the artery of Bergslagen. The surface varies, sometimes it is fast and easy to ride, sometimes a little more challenging. A mountain bike or gravel bike makes the journey smoother.
The Striberg minefield was one of the country's largest and most modern mining areas when it was in operation. Ore has been mined here since the 14th century and production continued until 1967. Today you cycle through an area where the deep mine holes and old buildings still remind you of the hard work that once shaped Bergslagen.
Here, you'll be greeted by dramatic mine shafts with steep walls and dark water surfaces. Iron ore has been mined here since the Middle Ages and you can see traces of several different mining methods - from fire setting to dynamite. It's an atmospheric place that tells you a lot about the region's long mining history.
History and the present meet in Järnboås. Here, Ernst Kirchsteiger transformed an old blast furnace into a modern home in a popular TV show. The village is also known for Larsmäss, the largest crafts market in the Nordic region, held every August. The setting around the church and Lake Finn makes the village a natural place to pause.
The tour ends at Hjulsjö Church, a unique wooden church built in stages from the 17th century. The church is made of logs and joined together with strong iron teeth - a building technique that makes it particularly special. Here, the cycling adventure is tied together in a village where both natural and cultural history go hand in hand.
