The Mine Loop is an easy, hilly bike ride on paved country roads. You cycle through an area that is characterized by the mining industry that laid the foundation for Bergslagen's success.
Here you can clearly see how ironworking once shaped the area - from stately mansions to deep mine shafts. The tour offers beautiful views, bathing places and several exciting stops along the way. You share the road with cars, which requires normal attention.
The tour starts at charming Nora Station, where the railway museum preserves memories of the time when the railway was central to the development of Bergslagen. Here you can peek into the waiting room, stroll around the yard and see locomotive sheds and workshops. A perfect starting point in the wooden town of Nora.
Just north of Nora is Lilla Trädgården - a commercial garden that in summer also runs a cozy café. A nice first stop to fill up with energy.
Åkerby Herrgård, today a hotel and conference center with restaurant and café, stands by Lake Fåsjön. The manor offers a rural environment and a piece of Bergslag romance.
Here you will find the traces of iron ore mining from the Middle Ages to the 1930s. The paths lead you past deep mine holes, ore squares and remains from different eras of mining. From Dalberget, a nice view of both Fåsjön and Usken awaits - a perfect place for a picnic.
One of the country's largest mining fields, with mining going on until 1967. Here you can see ruins, old passages and Carl's shaft, once the heart of the mining area. Striberg offers dramatic industrial history in a tranquil forest setting.
A nature reserve close to urban areas that offers a wide variety of flora and fauna, where calcareous soil favors many species. A quiet contrast to the mining landscape - here you can rest your legs for a while at the picnic tables and enjoy the tranquillity of the forest.
Back in Nora, the tour ends in Kvarteret Bryggeriet, the city's vibrant cultural district. The old industrial buildings are now home to artists, craftsmen and creative businesses. Here you can see glass art, blacksmithing and textile crafts, or have a coffee in the neighborhood restaurant and café.
This cycling tour is easy and requires no special skills.
It is possible to travel by public transport to Nora, but for those who want to take the bike, it is usually most convenient to travel by car.
