Follow country roads and winding lanes from Norrtälje out to the barren archipelago island of Vätö, where granite meets the sea and history feels close. Along the way, you'll pass Iron Age burial grounds, rune stones and red-painted farms - a landscape shaped by both people and the ice sheet.
The durable red and gray granite from Vätö has left its mark far beyond the island. Sculptor Carl Milles often used the gray granite for both plinths and sculptures, and in Stockholm the paving stones are laid with stone from Vätö.
The tour offers both culture and nature, with space for swimming, coffee and small detours to local craftsmen. A quiet but rich bike ride through Roslagen - from city pulse to archipelago peace.
This bike tour starts at Lilla Torg, outside the tourist office, in central Norrtälje.
The rune stone at Norrtälje church is a copy from 2004, made by the rune carver Kalle Runristare. The original was erected during the Viking Age in memory of Brodd, and is known from a 17th century drawing.
When Vätövägen changes to 70 km/h, there is a graveled bike path on the right side of the road. It follows the road all the way to Hassellidsvägen.
At Gillfjärden, turn left from Vätövägen and onto Roslagsbrovägen. Pay attention to the traffic. Feel free to lead the bike across the road if you feel unsafe.
Now you enter a beautiful agricultural landscape with winding country roads.
Soon you will reach the Brännström nature reserve, with its varied nature of rocky fields, damp forest areas and rich vegetation. A perfect opportunity for a break - read the information on the sign or follow the marked path a bit into the reserve.
Soon you will arrive at Yveli's candle shop - a cozy workshop and store. Here you can buy handmade scented candles, candles and scented sticks to take home.
If you take a short detour to the right towards Nysättra, you'll find Vätöportens Pizzeria - a local favorite. Perfect for a well-deserved break on the road.
On the way down to the bathing area, you pass two burial grounds from the Late Iron Age (400-1050 AD). The northern one, at Vikingastigen 28, contains around 50 graves, while the southern one, opposite Vikingastigen 34, contains around 35. There are both round stones, burial mounds and rectangular graves.
Take the opportunity to take a refreshing dip at Nysättra bathing place - a quiet and natural place with a small sandy beach, jetty and shallow water before continuing out towards Vätö.
As you approach Vätö, you will soon reach the Vätö Bridge. Enjoy the fantastic view of Vätösundet and Vätö church from the mid-14th century.
Vätö church, built in grey stone in the 14th century, is known for its well-preserved frescoes and tranquil setting. A stone's throw from the church are the ruins of a Franciscan monastery, where Grey Friars lived in simplicity and devotion during the Middle Ages. Remnants of their presence can still be found here today.
At Franssons Gård you will find a small but hearty bakery, where freshly baked bread and buns are baked daily. It's a popular stop - many people crave their breakfast first thing in the morning.
Now you've arrived in Harg, and here you'll find a well-stocked convenience store that will be a welcome stop. Take a seat on the benches outside and buy something good.
The tour runs partly along the busier Vätövägen, where there are some short stretches without a bike lane. Be extra careful here.
