The Mälardalsleden out of Västerås follows the fine harbor promenade with its modern skyline. Here it is well adapted for cyclists and you pass both Framnäsbadet and a charming garden at Fågelvik. Then the trail leaves Lake Mälaren for a while and turns inland.
The road goes through open agricultural landscapes and farms - among other things, you cycle straight through the farmhouse at Brunnby farm. From here it is not far to Anundshög, one of Sweden's foremost and most magnificent ancient monument areas. The burial mound is the largest in the country and dates back to 500-1050 AD. The area also contains stone formations such as the double ship set and a unique rune stone monument. The site has a special mystique about it and bears clear traces of its thousand-year history. There is also a café that is usually open Tuesday-Saturday.
After Anundshög, there is a short stretch (just under 1 km) along a busy road, before the route leads back out on quiet country roads through an easy-to-cycle agricultural landscape. Björksta church, beautifully situated on a hill, is a nice place for a break. In Fjärdhundraland there are several farm shops - look out for signs with opening hours.
The cycling continues along nice country roads all the way to Enköping, a charming small town known for its many parks - over 20 of different character. The most famous is Drömparken, created by Dutchman Piet Oudolf. Here you are greeted by a lush interplay of clipped hedges and flowering perennials.
The town center has plenty of accommodation, restaurants and shops. Just outside, about 5 km south along the cycle path, is Bredsands strand - a shallow swimming area. For overnight stays, there is Haga Castle (5 km outside the city) and Jädra gårdshotell north of Enköping, which can be reached via a smaller gravel road along the busier Salavägen. If you'd rather swim indoors, there's Pepparrotsbadet, named after the plant that made Enköping famous - the town was one of the world's largest producers of horseradish in the late 19th century. Approx. 95% asphalt, 5% gravel.
