You leave Pilgrimstad and today magnificent views of Storsjön, Östersund and the Jämtland mountains await. St. Olavsleden passes Runberget, and in Svedje stands the historic Kungsstenen, where Karl XIV Johan had breakfast in 1835. It was a chilly night, and the king saw frost on the grain for the first time. You cycle on towards Hållsta mill and through the villages of Balsta, Slåtte and Bodal, where you can enjoy views of the mountains. Jämtland's landscape flower, the protected orchid, grows in the area.
In Berge vid Storflatåkern you can get an insight into what the landscape looked like before the 19th century, with preserved cairns. The area's limestone is known as Sweden's finest, and Gusta has a stone museum. In the 1920s, this was the site of Scandinavia's largest stone industry. Brunflo has an impressive 30-metre-high castle, a 12th-century defence tower dedicated to St Olav. The name Brunflo means "well by the mire," and at Lövberget you will find St. Olav's spring. In Odensalakärret, three kilometers from Östersund, a variety of orchids flourish thanks to the calcareous water. Marked paths and trails lead you through a rich flora with species such as fly agaric, bridal spurge and soapwort. Östersund, the only town in Jämtland County, was founded in 1786 by Gustav III. A visit to Jamtli is recommended, where in summer you will meet people dressed in period costumes who bring history to life in the old houses.
Discover the islands of Lake Storsjön by bike. Free ferries connect Håkansta, Norderön and Isön, which has a bridge to Andersön - with scenic roads and great opportunities for overnight stays.
