From Östersund, cycle across the bridge to Frösön, which is named after the Aesop god Frö (Frej). Stop at the rune stone just west of Frösöbron (about 300 meters from Coop), where the inscription tells about Jämtland's Christianization. Cycle on and enjoy the view of Oviksfjällen. Frösö Church, built in the 13th century and dedicated to St. Olav, stands proudly on the island. In summer, the drama Arnljot here, which tells the story of the Viking from Gällö who fought alongside St. Olav at the Battle of Stiklestad.
Cross the bridge to Rödön and visit the 14th-century Tibrandsholm Castle. Listen to the waves and keep an eye out for the mythical Storsjöodjuret, which is said to hide in the depths. Rödön church is a medieval gem with beautiful interiors. You cycle through charming farmland with strawberries and potatoes, and pass St Olavskällan in Vikeränget. From here you go through the forest and on to the lively village of Nälden. At Vaplan, further upstream along the Faxån river, there is an old ford once used by pilgrims.
Follow quiet village roads to Valne, where the terrain becomes more hilly on the way to Glösa. Here you'll be greeted by 5,000-year-old rock carvings depicting moose, surrounded by stone outcrops and a babbling brook that creates a sense of timelessness. The trail then continues on the Wedding Trail to Wången, which offers horse training and an inn - a perfect place to stop and admire the views of Lake Alsensjön and the mountains. Finish off with a visit to Backgården in Alsen, where you can enjoy an inspiring craft exhibition in the summer.
