The bike ride starts in Badhusparken and takes you further out on Frösön's heights along cozy bays and further out on Rödön and to Ås. On the way you will meet runes from the Viking Age, cafes with mountain views, blooming farm shops and nice bathing places.

This is a journey where both landscape and history meet. You cycle through living cultural heritage and lush cultivation, pass legends about the Storsjöodjuret and get the chance to both dip, coffee and strawberry picking. The tour offers many nice stops - from the quiet Lavsjön to the lively Jamtli - and whether you are looking for inspiration, taste or tranquility, there is something here for you.

    Bathhouse Park

    Badhusparken is beautifully situated on the shores of Lake Storsjön, in the center of Östersund. With open grass areas, playgrounds and walkways, it is a popular place all year round. The park is also a starting point for this bike ride. From here you can easily reach the footbridge to Frösön, Surfbukten and further out into Jämtland's nature and mountain world.

    The Frösön runic stones

    This is Jämtland's only known rune stone (ca 1030-1050 AD). The stone has been interpreted as a sign of Jämtland's independence, and the snake on the stone is said by some to represent the Great Lake Monster. The inscription reads: "Östman Gudfast's son had this stone erected and this bridge made and he had Jämtland Christianized..."

    The summer garden

    With miles of views of Lake Storsjön and the mountains lies Sommarhagen - the composer Wilhelm Peterson-Berger's artist home from 1914. Here he created well-known works such as Sommarsång and Vid Frösö kyrka. The house is now a museum, a national romantic gem filled with history and personal details. Every summer, concerts are held in the music hall, and 2025 offers world premieres and classical elements in the series Musik på Sommarhagen. On the ground floor, Café Sommarhagen serves lunch, homemade coffee and an unforgettable view.

    Frösö church

    Frösö Church offers one of Jämtland's most beautiful views - of Lake Storsjön, the landscape and the mountains on the horizon. This is not only a place of tranquillity and reflection, but also a living part of history. The church has its roots in the Middle Ages and is located along the St. Olavsleden, the world's northernmost pilgrimage route.

    Café Stocke Titt

    At the top of Frösöberget, in the old captain's dwelling at Frösö hembygdsgård, is Café Stocke Titt - a charming café with magical views of Storsjön and the mountain world. Here, history, nature and tasty coffee meet in a unique environment. Outside, the viewing tower awaits those who want to see even further, and for the younger ones there is a balance and obstacle course that attracts play and movement.

    Frösö Park

    Frösö Park is located on historic land, where F4 - Jämtland's air force - operated from 1926 until its closure in 2004. Today, the area has taken on a new shape and become a vibrant meeting place for businesses, visitors and nature lovers alike. Here, modern businesses coexist with hotels, spas, training facilities and beautiful hiking areas. The open space and proximity to mountains, forest and airport make Frösö Park a unique hub.

    Bynäset beach

    It's not hard to understand why the area is called the "Östersund Riviera". Here, at Västbyviken on the north side, you are greeted by a long sandy beach, open grassy areas and shallow, bathing-friendly water. The sheltered bay warms up quickly and invites you to take a dip with a view of Åreskutan and Oviksfjällen.

    Watching the Storsjöodjuret

    At the Rödö Bridge and the old ferry terminal on Rödön, you can look out for the mythical Storsjöodjuret. Here, where the strait narrows and your eyes are easily caught by the movement of the water, the beast is said to have appeared more than once. Along the shoreline you can follow strange tracks leading into the forest towards Tibrandsholm. An information sign tells you about sightings and the legend behind Jämtland's own sea monster. This is one of a total of eight lookout points around Lake Storsjön.

    Tibrandshögen

    Tibrandshögen at Rödösundet is the site of a 15th century defense fortress. The bailiff Tibrand lived here - notorious for his harsh rule and deeply hated by the local population. According to legend, he was eventually driven out in a popular uprising. Today, the mound is a historical destination with beautiful views of Lake Storsjön. Nearby is also one of the scouting sites for the legendary Storsjöodjuret - history and mystery in one.

    Acksjön (Vikekärret)

    A short nature trail takes you through troll forest and marshland to Vikekärret, a former lake bed with unique orchid flora. Among other things, guckusko, blood keys and fly flowers bloom here. The best time to visit is in June when the guckusko is in full bloom. Information boards along the way tell you more about the nature and history of the place.

    The town hall

    Here you will find a creative summer oasis where a café, interior design shop and exhibitions meet in a charming rural setting. Homemade coffee and light meals are served here, while the shop offers carefully selected furnishings and clothes in sustainable design.

    The land of strawberries

    Strawberry country is a perfect stop for cyclists. Here you can stretch your legs and pick sun-ripened strawberries straight from the fields - the best break of the summer. The cozy strawberry café serves cake and coffee in the middle of a flowery park, with views of the mountains. In case of rain, there is seating under a roof and in greenhouses.

    Lava Lake

    Lavsjön on Rödön is a quiet bird lake with chalk-white shores and an unusual flora that makes the area unique. Several orchid species thrive here, including the rare guckuskon, which blooms in early summer and attracts both botanists and nature lovers. The limestone-rich soil is home to a rich and unique plant world, and the lake is also a great place for birdwatching or a moment of peace in nature.

    The trader in Dvärsätt

    In the middle of Dvärsätt is a shop that is more than just a place to buy food. The shop is a natural meeting place for both villagers and passers-by. Here you will find everything from fresh bread and basic goods to sweets, gifts and a friendly hello. The shop is run with heart and care, and it shows - whether you just want to buy milk or chat about the weather. A perfect stop during your bike ride.

    Fröjas

    Fröjas is located in the heart of Ås - an inspiring greenhouse shop, gift shop and café in one. Here they serve homemade coffee, soup lunches and hearty sandwiches in a green environment that flourishes all year round. The shop offers carefully selected gifts and decor, with a sense of beauty and sustainability.

    Ås Garden

    Ås Trädgård is located in the village of Ås - a farm shop with KRAV-grown vegetables, cut flowers and a strong focus on sustainability. Here, freshly harvested produce is grown with care and sold directly from the field, from summer and into winter. In addition to shopping in the store, you can pick flowers yourself, participate in volunteer days or visit the farm's events such as harvest festivals and concerts.

    Göviken bathing place

    Göviken is a bathing area close to the city with light sand, a shallow beach and views of the mountains. Families with children, exercisers and summer vacationers gather here to enjoy sun, swimming and cooling dips. There is both a sandy bottom and grassy areas to spread your blanket on.

    Jamtli

    Jamtli is a museum where history and culture come alive. There is both an exciting indoor museum with exhibitions all year round and an outdoor museum with historic houses and farms. In the summer, Historielandet comes to life with actors in period costumes, and during the rest of the year Jamtli offers exhibitions, events and family-friendly activities.

Good to know

This bike tour is easy to cycle and does not require any specific prior knowledge. You cycle mostly (approx. 95%) on asphalt.

There are free ferries from Håkansta to Norderön and from Norderön to Isön, which in turn has a bridge connection with Andersön.

Getting Here

You can travel to Östersund by train or bus. You can bring your bike on Inlandsbanan (pre-booking required) as well as on the regional train Norrtåg (max 4 bikes per carriage). On SJ trains, the bike must be folded and must not exceed the dimensions 140x85x30 cm or weigh more than 25 kg.
