The bike package for those who want to get to know the lushest and most luxuriant part of the island, with Gotland's most famous rauk Hoburgsgubben. Southern Gotland, or the Sudret as the Gotlanders themselves say, has a varied landscape, beautiful beaches and an interesting history. The cycling holiday starts and ends with one night at the Best Western Solhem Hotel in Visby.
Best Western Solhem Hotel is located right next to Visby's well-preserved ring wall from the 13th century, in the beautiful Palissad Park. Once you've installed yourself, it's time to look around at the Visby World Heritage Site. The city is one of the best preserved medieval cities and the alleys, ruins, churches and the mighty ring wall give a very special atmosphere. Here are nice parks and the sea right next to the lures for swimming. Watch the sunset in the ocean from the boardwalk and then stroll into town for dinner at one of all the cozy restaurants.
After a nice sleep and a delicious breakfast buffet, your cycling holiday begins south along the sea. You can pick up your bikes at Visby Rental Bike, at Österport (Ring Wall). Take a stop in Kneipp village where Pippi's Villa Villekulla attracts play, as well as a water and summer country with adventure golf. Enjoy the views, but watch out for sheep on the bike path! With a few kilometers left on today's stage, you pass one of Sweden's most famous beaches - Tofta. Drop into the white sand and rest for a bit, treat yourself to a dip in the cooling water.
Then continue to Västergarn, a small fishing village with surroundings that attract an evening stroll. Here you will have dinner and overnight.
Today, the southern cape of Gotland awaits you, about 60 km away. First you pass Klintehamn, from here the boats go to fantastic Stora and Lilla Karlsö. Other excursion areas are Klinteberget with a wide view, and where the protected red-flowered blossoms. From the road through the Ekstakustens nature reserve you have a magnificent view of the sea and the Charles Islands. Nature is characterized by beautifully carved shorelines of gravel and stone. Further in from the sea, a low-lying beach forest takes over, where the outermost pines and spruces are severely choked by wind and salt splash - they formally creep along the ground. In the middle part of the reserve lies the fishing village Kronvall, according to the story, it was here like the Danish king Valdemar Atterdag and his country step 1361. Skansudd has a defense facility, which was erected in the early 18th century.
You cycle out on the narrow nose where Burgsvik is located, the central town of Storsudret has long been the center for shipping and production of sandstone. Grinding stones are still being manufactured at Gotlandsbrynet. Burgsvik became known to the Swedish people through the TV program "So much better" which is recorded at the guest house Grå Gåsen. The last kilometers pass Vamlingbo and Sundre before reaching Pensionat Holmhällar. Holmhällar is nestled in pine forest with a three km long sandy beach and a large rauk field just a few hundred meters away.
A short bike ride takes you down to Gotland's southernmost point Hoburgen, the place with the most sunshine hours in the country. Here, Gotland ends in a plateau that drops dramatically into a cliff edge towards the sea. The oyster consists of cliffs of reef limestone, called the Sundreformation, which rests on a sandstone formation, the Burgsvik Formation. The cliffs are 20-30 meters high in their places. You have the sea in three winds - a true feeling of freedom! There are caves and ruffles here, the place is excellent for bird watching, all year round you can see birds of prey floating in the sky.
Hoburg's lighthouse is open to visitors during the summer, and the raucous Hoburgs Old Man is a given stop. When you stand at a certain angle, the smoke looks like a man's head - hence the name. You sleep another night at Pensionat Holmhällar.
Today the tour goes north on the island, over the barren fascinating landscape where poppies bloom, among Gotland farms and churches. Havdhem, Hemse and Stånga are places you pass along the road. Today's goal is Ljugarn, an old port where lime, limestone, tar and wood products were exported. Towards the end of the 19th century the resort became a seaside resort with prominent guests. In the evening, dinner and lodging await at Pensionat Lövängen.
After yesterday's six miles, a day's rest will be great. Walk along the sea and just be. Ljugarn is one of Gotland's most popular resorts with a kilometer-long sandy beach. Visit Vitvär's small fishing village and the Rauk field Folhammar with its beautiful formations. Here you will also find Strandridaregården's museum and several nice restaurants. You will have dinner at Pensionat Lövängen where you will also sleep another night.
Now your last bike route is waiting for Gotland for this time, back to Visby. Enjoy the fresh air on your way across the countryside. On the way to Visby you pass Roma, famous for its monastery ruins. At Roma Kungsgård you can try different crafts, buy nice Gotland products, have a cup of coffee, go for a guided tour or stroll around in the historical environment. Here you will also find Roma glassworks with factory sales, the shop Gotländska Rum with crafts, design and exciting art exhibitions.
Check in at the Best Western Solhem Hotel in Visby and venture out into the bustling streets for one last fun evening.
After the breakfast buffet, it may be the location for some shopping. Visby offers many fine shops with local crafts and groceries. Then the ferry takes you back to the mainland.
