Get to know Skåne by cycling from Kristianstad to Simrishamn in the southeast. The bike ride goes along the beautiful cycle path Sydostleden and lasts for three days. One of the gems along the way is the medieval city of Åhus with its monastic wall and the opportunity to visit the liquor company The Absolut Company's visitor center. There will also be cycling in nature reserves with beautiful forests and wonderful Haväng where you can admire the 5500 years old megalith grave Havängsdösen.
Food and drink is always a special experience in Skåne. During the trip there will be a visit to Kivik with its classic apple orchards. During the apple market in September, you can view a work of art made from 35,000 apples. You spend the night at the Cocoon farm hotel in Degeberga and the Alunbruket Bed & Breakfast in Verkeån's nature reserve.
The bike tour starts in Kristianstad in southern Skåne. The city has a long history and was founded after the Kalmar War in 1614 by the Danish king Christian IV. Don't miss the Naturum Vattenriket which is not far from central Kristianstad. Then you continue towards Åhus, which is one of Sweden's best preserved medieval cities with narrow alleys and picturesque half-timbered houses. Here is Absolute Home where you can learn more about the history and philosophy behind Absolut Vodka. You can enjoy genuine Scanian food at Åhus Gästgivaregård and wonderful ice cream can be found at Tre Kulor ice cream kiosk at the bottom of the dock at the harbor.
The journey continues towards Friseboda Nature Reserve and here you cycle along the Hanö Bay just next to the sea. You will spend the night at the charming Cocoon Gårdshotell in Degeberga and have dinner in the hotel restaurant.
You start the day with breakfast at the hotel, and then head for today's goals Alunbruket and Österlen. At Maglehem you can depart from the cycle path on the embankment and cycle to Blåherremölla. Here you can buy homemade cakes and drink coffee in a wonderful old farm and mill environment.
For many, Brösarp slopes are the very image of Österlen - both the north and the south - and here there is much to discover. The views are wonderful with miles of views over the valley of Verkeån. Haväng is an enchantingly beautiful place where miles of sandy beaches meet moorland and rare sandstones. Christinehof's Ekopark and Christinehof's castle from the 18th century and Hallamölla waterfalls are also well worth a visit. In the evening, dinner and ready-made beds await at Alunbrukets Bed & Breakfast. Just next door is Skåne's oldest coffeehouse, Alunbruket, where you can drink coffee in a wonderful cultural environment.
After a delicious breakfast, you cycle on winding roads in the beautiful and hilly countryside with the final destination of Simrishamn. You pass the old fishing village Kivik with the Appel Kingdom, Kivik's Museum and the annual Apple Market. Take a break and stop at one of the cozy cafes and restaurants. Stop at Stenshuvud National Park and hike up to the top of the mountain with glorious views of the sea and Kivik with all apple gardens. A bit south lies Djupadal, with Mandelmann's Gardens.
Simrishamn is usually called the Austrian capital, and dates back to the 12th century. Here are picturesque pastel-colored houses with beautifully carved doors typical of the neighborhood. A little south is Glimmingehus, the Nordic region's best preserved medieval castle Glimmingehus and not so far from Ales Stones, Sweden's largest preserved shipwreck. Other places to visit are the charming fishing villages of Skillinge and Brantevik. Maybe you stay an extra night and discover the surroundings?
