Falu copper mine is located in the very heart of Sweden's industrial history. The mining took place for more than a thousand years and the mine is today a World Heritage site on UNESCO's list. Right next to the huge open pit hole Big bump lies the bicycle-friendly accommodation Gruvortens B& Bs. Exactly the right place for those who want to explore Falun and live on historic land.
Big bumps are something really extra. The hundred-meter-deep hole was created when several mines in Falu copper mine collapsed at the same time in June 1687. What could have become a human disaster was not because the race occurred when everyone was vacant on Midsummer Day. The second day of the year when the workers were vacant was Christmas Day.
In Falun and the surrounding area there are lots of nice cycling opportunities. You can cycle in the city if you show consideration for pedestrians, there are many nice cycling routes to choose from and of course excellent conditions for MTB.
The building where Gruvortens B&B is housed is called Konstmästargården. The name comes from the old designation of the engineers in the mine - the artists. One of the country's foremost engineers of all time has actually lived here, namely the energetic father of Swedish mechanics Christopher Polhem (1661-1751). The building is newly renovated and there are seven rooms to choose from. With a little luck you can see a mountain hill and from the terrace you can see the sunset.
The interiors of the rooms breathe in the rich traditions of the area. There are 5 double rooms and 2 family rooms. All have names of well-known historical persons connected with Falun and Falu mine. How about Mrs. Emerentia's room, Artist Barcheu's room, Artist Stefansson's room, Artist Wallman's room, Mrs. Charlotte's room Artist Sohlberg's room or Queen Sofia Magdalen's room?
The artist's toilets and showers are shared and there is also a sauna in the house. An organic and locally produced breakfast buffet is served each morning. Parking is outside the house and there is free Wifi available throughout the building. All parts of the house can be reached by wheelchair. The accommodation is non-smoking and pets are not allowed.
