This wild and romantic bike ride in Sápmi in northern Sweden lasts for 8 days with 7 nights and is approximately 225 kilometers long. The tour starts and ends in Umeå. You cycle through the wonderful nature of Västerbotten and sleep in accommodations with hotel standards. During the bike ride you will pass many large and small lakes where there are swimming opportunities. Granö Beckasin is located on the beautiful Ume River, and here you can choose to stay overnight in one of their spectacular Bird Nests high up among the trees (booked as an option).

“Today's walk through the endless greenery and the seclusion of the great forests gave me an inner peace that I enjoyed immensely. My head is empty, far from the daily routines, the bustle and the noise. The trip along these long roads has a meditative and relaxing quality. We can't have seen more than four cars in the whole day ”

Day 1

Arrival Umeå

If you are traveling by train, get off in the middle of the city, and Hotel Aveny is not far from the train station. For those of you who fly, the transfer service at Umea Airport will wait for your arrival and take you to central Umea. At the hotel you will receive your bikes, general travel information and personal information about the trip. You can also choose to have your luggage transported between the various destinations (we recommend this) as an option in your booking.

Tip! Visit the University and the European Capital of Culture 2014.

Day 2

Umeå - Vännäs

Discover the fantastic nature along the Ume River. There are many interesting cultural sights to visit along the way, such as a hydropower museum that is a 150-year-old frame saw. When you arrive at Vännäs, dinner awaits at the hotel.

Day 3

Vännäs - Granö

If you thought you had left the trampled paths before then you have not been to Sápmi. From Vännäs you continue to follow the Ume River. You pass the ponds and the road will take you through small villages to Ramsele. Once upon a time, this village was a co-camp. Here you can marvel at an old lavvu and other typical Sami buildings. The Sami were not just nomads, they also had their characteristic lifestyle as farmers and craftsmen.

When you arrive in Granö you will be welcomed by Granö Beckasin, located on a peninsula in the middle of the Ume River. At Granö Beckasin, it's all about experiencing nature and opening your senses to new experiences. For example, you can stay high up in the trees and enjoy a bird's eye view of the surroundings. Then wait for dinner with local specialties.

Day 4

Go on a moose safari on the bike or visit Lake Korbysjön, which is a remote lake with a wonderful sandy beach. You can get many excursion suggestions at Granö Beckasin Lodge and get advice on how to best see the forest king of the moose.

For dinner you can decide for yourself if you want to grill down at the lake or enjoy the dishes in the restaurant again. Whatever you choose, it will taste good.

Day 5

Granö - Vännforsen

This day you will follow ancient paths. Kussjön invites you to a bath. The village of the same name is one of the oldest in Västerbotten and has a rich history. Here old traditions are kept alive and soft bread is still baked. Along the lake and through the deep forests you come to the Vindel River, which is one of the five last unregulated rivers in Sweden (those called national rivers). Take a walk around the streams and nature reserve. The river is extra impressive during the high tide period in mid-June. The Vindel River is also famous as one of the finest raft rivers in the country.

The next stop is at the ice cream farmer. Here you will find unique flavors such as moose grass, Västerbotten cheese with pears or cloudberries with caramel. To ensure that the Fjällko breed does not die out, the farmers Helena and Tomas suggested that they process the milk themselves and use it to make ice cream. The idea has been a great success. Finally you come to an old farmhouse where young people have returned to the traditions and togetherness of previous generations. By The River B&B will show you the typical Lapland farmhouse from the inside, and a relaxing place near the Vindel River. A completely different experience of how to live.

Day 6

At a time that suits you, you can meet your hosts who tell you about different programs and tours that you can take. They are happy to help book a beaver safari or something else that would be exciting to discover. They give you advice on when to start and about the various sights found in the deep forests. Then you can plan and carry out your own adventure as it suits you.

You can also choose two nice bike excursions. The Spölands round is 17 km and Tavelsjö about 50 km.

Day 7

Vännfors - Umeå

The final stage will take you back to the Ume River, this time from the other side. It is like a time travel with contrasts from the Stone Age to the present. The impressive rock carvings in Norrforssund and the modern Sörfors dam together show how important the place has been for people who have lived here throughout history and how much the conditions have changed. Along the way, there are two fine inns you can visit. In addition, you can see and buy local handicrafts at Slöjdernas Hus. Here you will find unique souvenirs that are typical of northern Sweden. If you are interested in plants, you must visit the site's arboretum (planting with trees and shrubs), a highlight for botanists. Use the last day to visit the outdoor museum Västerbotten Museum or campus at Umeå University. Your last night for this time in Sapmi you will spend at Hotel Aveny where you also return the bikes.

Day 8

Umeå and back home

On the last day you have more opportunities to discover Umeå with its university. The city was also the European Capital of Culture 2014. You can shop in shops or stroll around the city. There is no shortage of interesting places in this youthful city. For those taking the flight, a taxi is waiting at the hotel to take you to the airport.

Many beautiful views and beautiful nature. In general, the roads were good, some sections had poor surfaces and some others had a little more traffic. Based on the description of the tour, we thought it would be more flat, but there were some slopes. Especially one of the stages had few "natural stops" at various sights. The accommodations were generally good. We chose not to buy full board. We also had a storm kitchen, which felt very good as there were no restaurants or similar lunch options on several stages. We feel that you have to be relatively fit to be able to cycle, but then we also had our own pack with us. We had a wonderful cycling week and have many wonderful memories and experiences home with us.

We had expected more cycling along the rivers, and not so much on country roads. At times it was quite tough but fun biking. The accommodations were very good, especially Granö Beckasin and By the River. The lunch packages offered at the various locations varied greatly, at one point we barely got anything, while others were very good.

For us the bike tour was a wonderful way to spend our holidays in Sweden. We really enjoyed the stays in the different places and were able to see the beautiful nature of the country. The tour was very well described and the service was outstanding.
