In this cycling package you get to experience a combination of water, beautiful nature and sights that suit you perfectly when traveling by bike. Discover charming Strängnäs with its cathedral and the idyllic Mariefred.
A steamboat trip takes you from Stockholm to the Sörmland countryside, a landscape characterized by meadows, forests, castles and lakes. Cycle the coastal path along Lake Mälaren past Taxinge Castle with its delicious cake buffet until you reach charming Mariefred, an idyll of colorful wooden houses by the lake that is dominated by the impressive Gripsholm Castle. Then you take you through the open landscape to Strängnäs, a lively harbor with a historic center and dramatic cathedral that dominates the city's skyline. Sit back and enjoy the landscape and lake views on board the historic steamboat as you calmly travel across Lake Mälaren back to Stockholm.
Each cycling day is about 40 km (it is also possible to shorten the distance) in slightly hilly terrain. Day 1 you leave the steamboat at 11.50. Day 2 the steamboat departs from Mariefred at 16.30. Day 1 you can get off the steamboat later and shorten the cycling by about 10 km. You can also take the steam train or steamboat from Taxinge castle to Mariefred and reduce cycling by about 13 km, but this is due to timetables that are more limited during the low season.

Day 1 - Stockholm-Överenhörna-Taxinge castle-Mariefred

In the morning you take the steamboat from central Stockholm and go out on beautiful Lake Mälaren. The steamboat leaves you in picturesque Sörmland where you begin your cycling adventure. Tread along small roads through a changing landscape with open fields, sleepy villages, scattered barns and deep forests. Pass mile-wide views of Lake Mälaren's waters and islands, as well as charming Överenhörna church and folk museum.
Your efforts will be rewarded at Taxinge Castle, not only because of its wonderful location by the water but also because of the cake buffet with over 65 different kinds of cakes. After your energy boost, it's time to start the last part of your trip to Mariefred. You have a number of choices from Taxinge Castle, either cycle along Lake Mälaren and enjoy the view of Gripsholm Castle along the road, or take the historic steam train or steamboat back to Mariefred if you want to rest from the bicycle saddle. **
Ride to picturesque Mariefred and enjoy this charming place. Founded in 1605 and known for its narrow, winding streets and colorful wooden houses, Mariefred is even more famous for one of the most important and powerful castles in the region, Gripsholm Castle.
Day 2 - Mariefred-Strängnäs-Mariefred-Stockholm

Today's bike ride takes you from Mariefred along the Näckrosleden which winds along small roads and gravel roads through the open landscape with sweeping views. Your destination today is Strängnäs, a lively port city with a historic center and the famous windmill that rises above the old city center. Take a stroll through the picturesque streets, enjoy a coffee break in one of the many charming cafés and stroll along the promenade. Also do not miss a visit to Strängnäs' highlight; the impressive cathedral from the 13th century that stands proudly in the heart of Strängnäs.
Back to the bikes and you return to Mariefred in time for a visit to Gripsholm's castle, Hjorthagen's nature reserve or a short walk in the charming village. Then it's time to board the steamboat and enjoy the quiet journey back to Stockholm, while you take home good memories from your cycling adventure in Sörmland.
