Utö holiday island has activities for everyone from sandy beaches and hiking trails to cozy shops and mining history, and by bike you can easily experience the island's many sides. Utö Värdshus is located a few minutes from the village and the harbor high up on a hill with a nice view of the islands in the southern archipelago. Rooms are located in either nearby historic buildings or cozy wooden cottages. There is a respected restaurant at Värdshuset - one of the archipelago's best! Enjoy a cruise back to Stockholm that winds its way past islands, narrow canals and idyllic summer houses by the water.
*) During the summer & autumn the trip can start in Stockholm (Strömkajen), Nacka Strand, Boo, Saltsjöbaden or Tyresö. In the spring, the journey starts at Saltsjöbaden or Tyresö (not Stockholm).
The first cycling day is just over 40 km on slightly hilly terrain. The second cycling day is shorter and flexible so that you can adjust the distance to your wishes - however, we recommend that you calculate at least 30 km of cycling to get the most out of the day.
Note that you do not have all day to complete the cycling distance. Day 1 you leave the archipelago boat at Tyresö at 10.25. Day 2 leaves the archipelago boat outside Gruvbryggan at 16.00. However, the cycle path is easy with slightly hilly terrain.
In the morning you take the archipelago boat from Stockholm to Tyresö, where you start cycling. The first attraction is Tyresö Castle, an impressive castle dating from the 17th century and lovely English gardens by the water. Take a walk over to the nearby small islands with wonderful sea views before continuing your bike ride along quiet small roads the short way to Tyresta National Park. Tyresta is a protected area of about 5000 hectares with trees over 400 years old, sparkling forest lakes and a rich wildlife. Deer roam free while moose wait their turn when dusk falls. Take a break from cycling and instead hike the paths through the endless forests of pine and birch, take a refreshing dip as you pass one of the many lakes. Find the perfect place and enjoy the tranquility and breathtaking nature in Stockholm's nearest national park.
After a while in the park then it is time to sit back in the saddle and cycle through fields and forests until you reach Årsta Havsbad where you will take the boat to the holiday island Utö. And if you have to wait for the boat trip to Utö, you can take a dip on Årsta's large, inviting sandy beach by the pier. But do not enjoy the beach too much, the boat is not waiting!
Then you go out among the thousands of islands that make up the southern part of Stockholm's archipelago, a seemingly endless archipelago with 24,000 islands located right on Stockholm's threshold. The archipelago journey ends at Utö where you will enjoy a good night's sleep.
Today you have a whole day on Utö to enjoy the island's culture and nature. Take your bikes and cycle along the entire island, cross a small bridge to bordering Ålö where you will find peace and quiet on a white sandy beach and fresh fish dishes in a charming fish restaurant with beautiful lake location.
You can also choose to island-jump to another nearby island called Nåttarö, where you can enjoy one of the archipelago's best sandy beaches with fantastic sea views. Utö also offers a variety of other activities from sea kayaking in the calm water, to hiking along the coastal paths, which pass smooth cliffs by the water, white sandy beaches while you breathe the fresh, clean archipelago air.
You then take the afternoon boat from Utö back to Stockholm and enjoy the beautiful landscape as the boat winds its way past islands, canals and idyllic summer houses by the water.
