Historisk cykeltur i Stockholms skärgård
2 nights 2 990 SEK / pers
This bike package allows you to explore classic maritime historical areas along parts of the so-called Vaxholm line that stretches from sparsely populated scenic northern Värmdölandet, across Rindö to the idyllic archipelago town of Vaxholm.
The narrow strait Oxdjupet has had a strategic significance since the 16th century and that is the reason why Fredriksborg's fortress was built here in the early 18th century. Cycling offers fantastic views of the archipelago, fresh air and lots of living history. As it should be, you sleep in old officers' quarters in modern hotel rooms that are housed in the fortress. The rooms are newly renovated in a preserved Art Nouveau style with period colors, wallpaper and tiled stoves. Fredriksborg is well known for its good food. You can have dinner on the pier or in the beautiful orangery with fantastic views of the bay.
Every day at 17:00, Fredriksborg Fortress is shown to visitors. From the lookout tower 60 meters up, you can see all the way to Stockholm. There are also nice mtb tracks if you want to cycle on paths in the forest. In collaboration with Skärgårdens Kanotcenter, Resarö, you can rent kayaks, mtb bikes and a large canoe for 14 people including full camping equipment.
The scenic surroundings on Värmdölandet invite to pleasant bike rides. Today's cycling offers picturesque archipelago buildings and largely untouched nature as the land was previously used militarily and is still owned by the state. Head north to Vreta farm and its large estates. Here is much of the settlement of older dates and you get a picture of how the archipelago used to be. There are also great opportunities for swimming. In the area there are deer and other animals that live fairly undisturbed.
You who are historically interested can inspect bunkers, battery sites and defensive walls from a bygone era. Note that they are only available from the outside, but the hotel has a loan book with pictures from the past where you can see how they were once used.
After a good breakfast, it's time to discover new sights in the area. Cross the strait with the ferry and discover the former seaside resort of Rindö with its charming villas, large verandas and cold bath houses. In the 19th century, a favorite destination for the Stockholm Society. The harbor area, which was previously used by KA1's coastal hunters, is today an attractive residential area with a harbor, restaurants and a cheese factory that makes cheese at the Swedish championship level. Then cycle west across the island towards Vaxholm and the next road ferry.
Take the ferry over to Vaxholm and pass Vaxholms Kastell with Fästningsmuseum. The archipelago city with its unspoilt wooden buildings, restaurants, ice cream parlor, small shops, bakery and tourist office. If you feel like it, you can take a ferry to Bogesundslandet and visit Bogesunds Slott. Otherwise, you steer the cow home for a well-composed three-course dinner at Fredriksborgs Hotell.
After a good night's sleep, eat a tasty breakfast and then prepare your departure.
