Experience the golden grain of the Göta Canal from Söderköping and Mem by the Baltic Sea to Motala by Lake Vättern. The Östergötland part of the canal is experienced by both bicycle and boat. You spend the first night in Söderköping. Here you can stroll around the picturesque and cozy streets in Söderköping and experience Astrid Lindgren's "Madicken city".

In this bike package, you get to experience one of the most beautiful parts of the Göta Canal when you cycle between Berg and Borensberg. It is one of the canal's absolute top attractions and the locks in Berg are well worth a visit. The impressive lock staircase, which consists of 7 locks, raises and lowers the boats no less than 18.8 meters. At first glance, it seems completely impossible to climb, but the designers, led by Baltzar von Platen, created these fantastic buildings. You then cycle on through a living countryside with beautiful houses and mansions from the 18th and 19th centuries. With M / S Kung Sverker, the journey continues across Lake Boren and on to Motala. Here you can learn more about the fantastic building project at the Göta Canal Exhibition at Motala Workshop. The cycling holiday can be summed up as a beautiful story through soothing landscapes and historical wings.

You leave your bike in Motala and can take a bus back to Söderköping or to your hometown. Here you will find information about bus times. Price reduction SEK 400 / person if you have your own bike.

Day 1

The first day will be a small soft start to your cycling holiday. In Söderköping you pick up your bike and pedal about 6 km out to Mem by Slätbaken. This is where the canal empties into the Baltic Sea. The bike ride goes on car-free roads with the canal as the nearest neighbor with boats gliding slowly.

Take the opportunity to discover the small town of Söderköping with its cozy little alleys and cobbled streets. A Visby in miniature. This is where they recorded the Madicken films that Astrid Lindgren wrote about in her books. Feel free to go on a guided tour with the small locomotive in Söderköping. You sleep at the classic spa hotel Söderköpings Brunn and here awaits a 3-course dinner as well as access to the relaxation area and an enjoyable stay in a wonderful environment.

Day 2

Today you cycle towards Norsholm, where lunch is served right next to the canal edge. Experience the tranquility of cycling along the Göta Canal. The canal is lined with large deciduous trees and winds its way through forests and open landscapes. The bike ride takes you on the car-free old towpaths along the Göta Canal. New for this year is the bicycle boat that takes you across Lake Asplången. A wonderful experience that enhances the joy during the trip. A cycling holiday along the "Swedish Blue Ribbon" is relaxation, nature and culture at the same time. You get good use of the 7-speed bikes in the hilly landscape around Lake Roxen. It is well worth the effort when you arrive at Berg and Bergs Slussar as is the largest tourist attraction along the Göta Canal, where the boats are lowered and raised a full 18 meters in the canal's impressive lock staircase with seven locks.

ATTENTION! You can choose to book a place on the "Roxensnabben" cycle boat and reduce the cycling distance by 35 km. For pricing and information, call Anders Nilsson on 070-60 60 661.

You spend the night at Ljungsbro hostel which is 3 km from Berg and dinner is enjoyed at Kanalkrogen Delimo in Berg. At Ljungsbro leisure center next to the hostel, there is access to a sauna, gym and pool.

Day 3

Ljungsbro-Motala (incl. Boat trip 2 hours)

After breakfast it is time to cycle to Borensberg, and here you board the boat M / S Kung Sverker. During the bike ride to Borensberg you pass locks and viaducts. It is a powerful feeling to stand and look down at the cars that go under the canal. The tour goes through the varied landscape in Östergötland. Enchanting views and historical stories accompany you on the tour. At 13.10 M / S Kung Sverker departs from Borensberg and arrives in Motala at 15.30. On board the boat, lunch is served while the boat glides majestically across the water. During the cruise, the skipper guides and tells you about the history of the Göta Canal and you get to take part in locking in the canal's steepest locking stairs in Borenshult. Once in Motala, you have time to explore the capital of the Göta Canal before it's time for dinner and a comfortable bed at Hotel Östermalm or Hotel Carl Friman.

Day 4

Motala (return to Söderköping or hometown)

Today you have time to experience the capital of the Göta Canal, Motala. As a conclusion to your cycling adventure, we recommend a visit to the Göta canal exhibition "From idea to reality". The exhibition is located in one of the two pavilions next to the canal in the area of Old Motala Workshop, between Borenshult's locks and Motala guest harbor in Lake Vättern. In the exhibition, you can see how Baltzar von Platen implemented the 300-year-old idea of building a waterway across Sweden by building the Göta Canal. Here you get to meet the people who made it possible to build the channel and learn more about the technology they used. You leave your rental bike in Motala and can take a bus back to Söderköping or to your hometown. There are buses between Motala and Söderköping at regular intervals, see timetable on ostgotatrafiken.se

We were never informed that Roxensnabben cost us SEK 1,000. The life jackets were way before the best before date!! He drove before we put on the vests and didn't tell us that we needed to dress warmly. On the other hand, we were very satisfied with the crossing that was included in point Tasty breakfast at the hostel.

Hi. We have clarified the information on our page that the boat trip with the Roxensnabben is not included in the bike package. We have also spoken to the person responsible for Roxensnabben who informed us that all life jackets are functional and in order. Kind regards Sweden by Bike.

Everything has been perfect, friendly treatment, Söderköping's well was a great hotel, we got to have our electric bikes in the luggage room at night. 🚴‍♀️ Good food in all places, and good reception and helpful people, unfortunately the boat at Asplången had broken down, had to load the bikes on a small truck, but they can't help anyone. 🚴

Wonderfully beautiful and nice. Lovely with an active holiday. The bike ride on day two was a bit too long and hilly so we never made it to dinner, had estimated if it was 4 instead of 60 km that day.
