Embark on a cycling journey through the beautiful church villages at the heart of Värmland literature, as Selma Lagerlöf and Göran Tunström have written about the region around Sunne and the sparkling waters of Lake Fryken. Enjoy the serene and tranquil surroundings of the long, narrow lake, blue heights, and rich agricultural landscape while residing in a historic mansion in the midst of picturesque Värmland. Savor locally-sourced ingredients with flavors derived straight from the forest, land, and lake, and experience a cycling adventure that will invigorate all your senses!

In the 17th century, Ulvsby manor was designated as a manor by Queen Kristina and later completely seized by her for her own use. In the novel "Gösta Berlings Saga", Selma Lagerlöf writes about Ulvsby as Länsmansgården.

During this cycling tour, you will mainly ride on serene and well-paved country roads, traversing idyllic agricultural landscapes, lush forests and scenic lakeshores. Occasionally, you may also encounter a charming old dirt road along the way. There's a brief section of about 600 meters that follows a busier road, but you can cycle it calmly and carefully. The terrain is predominantly flat with a few gentle slopes scattered along the way. Take your time to halt for a refreshing swim, enjoy the breathtaking views, and explore the artistic offerings that surround the lake. Come evening, unwind in the Queen Kristina's bathhouse and relish a delectable three-course dinner.

Ulvsby manor, which is located about 3 km north of Sunne center on the western side of Fryken, is the starting point for your cycling trip. There is plenty to discover by bike within comfortable distance. This package includes three nights as a basis, but can easily be shortened to two nights or extended with an extra night. The opening hours for the destinations vary, so please see the respective website or contact us for more information. We recommend that you bring a small backpack and your own thermos. Packed lunches with coffee/tea can be offered and you can pack them yourself during breakfast.

Lysvik Fryken

You begin the day by cycling through the center of Sunne and following the bike path towards Lysvik. At Björkefors Manor, turn off towards Lake Fryken and follow the old road that winds along the lake. Lysvik is a lively village with a shop, an ice cream café and a restaurant called Frykens Pärla. The restaurant is located right on the shore of Fryken and attracts people from near and far. Here, it's a great idea to stop for a delicious lunch and maybe a cold beer. Visit the ceramics studio Solsieg and experience interesting art. Don't forget to pick up some cycling treats at the little shop in the village.

You continue your journey through the beautiful landscape to Mallbacken, which is known for its successful football team in the top women's league. At Strandvallen, you can stop and, if you're lucky, watch a training or game. Cycle through Sunne city center and follow the beautiful cycle path towards Rottneros, where you can discover one of Europe's most unique sculpture parks. With hundreds of sculptures blending in with the surrounding gardens, Rottneros Park is a true beauty in the midst of Värmland's wilderness. As you continue towards the church village of Västra Ämtervik, you will pass Rottneros Bruk, one of Sweden's oldest paper mills. Ulvsby mansion bike holiday

Cycle from Ulvsby and follow the road towards Gräsmark, passing through a beautiful forest landscape and along Lake Rottnen. Take a break at Gettjärnsklätten and hike to the top for a fantastic view and unique flora. Experience about 50 kilometers of Värmland beauty and culture! Enjoy lunch at the old rectory, where Kerstin runs the Kalasmakeriet restaurant offering an authentic Swedish smorgasbord experience on Sundays. On other days, a well-prepared lunch is served.

Swing by Gräsmark Hembygdsgård and take a look at an authentic Finnish smokehouse. Here you can find buildings and collections from different eras in the village's history, including from the 17th century when Finns, also called "Slash-and-burn Finns," immigrated to the area. A smokehouse has been preserved here with an added Swedish-style cottage. Visit Asphagsstugan to see what life was like for a wealthy farmer in the 1800s. Take the opportunity to have a snack at the café in the beautiful old courtyard - and if you're lucky, there are cookies made with rye flour. Also, try the traditional Värmland dish "nävgröt." Hembygdsgården is open during the summer season, and nävgröt is usually served on Fridays.

Continue your journey along the southwestern shore of Lake Rottnen, a fault lake with sandbars and bays where you can take a refreshing swim and enjoy the tranquility. At Ski Sunne, you can experience classic downhill skiing in the winter. In the summer, it offers an opportunity for a challenging bike ride. Start the adventure by cycling up the hills and enjoy the stunning view of Värmland.

Friendly staff and good service. But loan bikes that were not adapted for road driving and only women's bikes.

Accommodation, food, hot tub - perfect could not be better. Bicycle Mårbacka - gpx map and description - completely ok Bicycle Rottneros - Culinary - parts on forest road even private road - should be specified. Bicycle - Lysvik - only half the road gpx in the file? Bicycle - Gräsmarksrundan - the gpx file is not even close to where it should be in detail.

Hi Peder,
Thank you for choosing to visit Ulvsby herrgård when you booked a cycling trip through Sweden by Bike. What fun that you had a good time and relaxed with us. We continue to develop cycling, cycle paths, etc. and look forward to the fact that a cycle path will soon be built from Sunne center and with a stretch past us. We do not recommend any private roads to cycle on but there may be smaller roads that can be perceived as private. We wish you a nice summer and hope to see you again soon! Kind regards Isabell / Olvsby Herrgård

Would help if there were better maps in place. Need to update places mentioned as worth visiting.

We lacked a really detailed cycling map with all the tours plotted. The manor maintained a high standard. How nice.

Accommodation; very accommodating staff and we got upgraded rooms. The bike package: total lack of in formation on detailed bike paths where there were, suggestions: make a detailed bike map for each excursion. Would appreciate renting an electric bike.

Even for a seasoned cyclist, cycling time was not consistent with reality. Almost a bit of unnecessary information that became misleading goes the distance.
August 2021, Ingrid C.
Bad with bike paths, a lot of road cycling with narrow roadsides.
August 2021, Karin W.
Fantastic most things. It was not so bike-friendly in several places but very beautiful. The accommodation was fantastic.
July 2021, Marie T.
The description of the routes was not so understandable but with the help of gps it went well. Then it was a busier road than I had thought but it went well anyway. Very good food and friendly staff.
July 2021, Karin T.
Lacked good map / directions, it was very difficult to find the right one. Luckily there were people to ask about the road. Lots to experience along the roads! Can compare with cycling in Halland, which had much better directions. Very nice accommodation, unfortunately inadequate shower with me. But very happy anyway!

Nice accommodation, incredibly good food. Nice staff. The map wasn't the best.
June 2021, Ann-Margreth L.
Some rounds a bit difficult cycled due to road work. A lot on country roads, but pleasant reception at all destinations.

Hi Ann-Margreth L. Thank you for staying with us and for taking the time to leave a review. Thanks also for bringing the cycle routes to my attention, I'll look over the descriptions and mark the rides that are a bit more hilly. Feel free to contact me regarding the dining experience, so I can learn more. How nice that you appreciated Värmland's openness and we are happy that you were well received out in the church villages. Wishing you a continued nice summer!

Had needed a more detailed map, especially when we cycled to Västra Ämtervik was very difficult to find the right one. You will probably get a much better directions.

Overall a very pleasant experience! However, the proposed day trips were very ambitious and we experienced that it took a little longer than stated to get around.
