Here you cycle between beautiful church villages in the heart of Värmland literature. Both Selma Lagerlöf and Göran Tunström have written about the area around Sunne and Lake Fryken's sparkling water. The long narrow lake, the bluish heights and the rich agricultural landscape that follows the lake from south to north. You will find a special tranquility in the landscape around Lake Fryken and can enjoy living in a historic mansion in the middle of beautiful Värmland. The food you eat is prepared from local ingredients with flavors sourced directly from the forest, land and lake. This is a bike package that makes all the senses happy!

Queen Kristina appointed Ulvsby manor house as a manor in the 17th century to later seize the manor entirely for his own part. Selma Lagerlöf writes about Ulvsby as Länsmansgården in the novel Gösta Berlings Saga, and she received the Nobel Prize in literature as the first Swedish and woman.

The bike ride mostly goes on quiet paved country roads in agricultural landscapes, in forest areas and along lakes. Every now and then an old gravel road can appear on the tour. A short distance, about 600 meters, goes on a busier road - here you cycle calmly and carefully. It's pretty flat, just a few slight inclines here and there. Take time to stop for a cooling dip, captivated by beautiful views and exciting encounters with the art around the lake. In the evening, relax in Queen Kristina's sauna and enjoy a well-composed 3-course dinner.

How many fabulous villages in Sunne do you want to ride to?
Two days & two villages SEK 3280 per person.
Three days & three (maybe four villages) SEK 4585 per person.
Fourth night including dinner SEK 1419 per person.

There is so much to discover within cycling distance and the package includes three nights. You can also choose two nights, or extend your stay by a fourth night. All variants start at Ulvsby Manor which is located on the west side of Fryken about 3 kilometers north of Sunne center. Opening hours at the visitor destinations can vary, see each place's website or talk to us at Ulvsby.

Day 1

Cycle to Östra Ämtervik - stop at Selma and Alma

Selma Lagerlöf Mårbacka

Cycle through the center of Sunne, feel free to stop and buy freshly baked buns in one of the village's bakeries. Take the cycle path out of Sunne and then follow the small country road, which winds through the open landscape, all the way to Selma Lagerlöf's home Mårbacka. Stop by Mårbacka and hear more about Sweden's first Nobel laureate in literature and the first woman in the Swedish Academy. Same chair as Sara Danius - no. Seven.

Take the opportunity and eat a simpler lunch at Mårbacka. To the south, small and large art experiences await - look into Södra Ås Konst o Kultur and the small ocheramakeri, do not miss the Alma Löv Museum where you meet nationally and internationally acclaimed artists. Stop at some bathing jetty along the Fryken and enjoy a cool dip.

On the way back to Sunne and Ulvsby mansion you pass Östra Ämtervik, which figures in Selma's stories and where Selma Lagerlöf's family grave is located. Scroll on towards Sunne and on to Ulvsby Manor, and a relaxing moment in Queen Kristina's bathhouse. In the evening, a delicious dinner is served in the manor's dining room overlooking the lake. Estimated cycle time about 3 hours excluding visits and breaks.

Day 2

Bike to Lysvik - look at art

Lysvik Fryken

Cycle through Sunne center and follow the cycle path towards Lysvik. At Björkefors Manor you turn off towards Fryken and follow the old road that winds along the lake. Lysvik is a lively little village with a shop, ice cream café that attracts people from near & far and the restaurant Frykens Pärla, which is located right next to the seafront on Fryken. Here it is great to stop for a good lunch and maybe a cold beer. Have a look at the Solsieg ceramics and experience interesting art. Feel free to buy some bicycle sweets in the small shop in the middle of the village.

The tour continues through the beautiful rural landscape towards Mallbacken. Known for his successful football team currently playing in the elite. Stop by the beach embankment, if you are lucky then training or match is in progress. Along the way, art experiences await - look at Gallery Träsmak, look into the studio of artist Per Pedersens in Tjustersby and artist Katarina Gåsste in Sunne. Also, take a look at Gallery Björken in the middle of Sunne.

Step in to Sunne, take the opportunity to stroll around the fine little shops, and then on to Ulvsby Manor, and a relaxing moment in Queen Kristina's bathhouse. Day 3

Cycle to Västra Ämtervik - visit the Rottneros Park sculpture park

Rottneros sculpture park

Cycle through the center of Sunne and follow the cycle path towards Rottneros. Stop in and visit Rottneros Park, one of Europe's strangest sculpture parks. Hundreds of sculptures surrounded by beautiful gardens and world-class - in the middle of the warm woodland landscape. Stop in, marvel at the strange park created by a man who put beauty above all. Take care and take a "gofika" in the beautiful environment.

Continue towards the church village of Västra Ämtervik. On the way you pass Rottneros Mill, which is one of Sweden's oldest paper mills. Continue on the old road that winds along the lake. Västra Ämtervik is a charming village with a long artist tradition. Have a look at Sillegården, which is by Fryken. A summer pension from the early 1900s, created by the textile artist Ida Sahlström. Today there are art exhibitions, crafts shop, restaurant and cafe.

The next stop may be Kulinrika Mat & Vineyard on Lake Aplungen. Here you can shop Kulinarika's delicious products made on apples. Scroll on to Sunne and Ulvsby Manor and relaxation in Queen Kristina's bathing cabin. In the evening, a delicious dinner is served in the manor's dining room overlooking the lake. Day 4

Cycle to Grassland - experience nature, Finnish culture and food culture

Ulvsby mansion bike holiday

Cycle from Ulvsby and follow the road towards Gräsmark. The road goes through forest landscape and along the lake Rottnen. Stop at Gettjärnsklätten and go up to the top. There are breathtaking views and a unique flora. Experience about 50 kilometers of warmth beauty and culture! Have lunch at the old prostitute farm. Here is Kerstin who runs the restaurant Kalasmakeriet with a really Swedish sandwich table - on Sundays. Other days there is a well-prepared lunch.

Turn past Gräsmark's hometown and peek into a genuine Finnish smokehouse. There are buildings and collections from different eras in the village's history. Everything from the 17th century when Finns immigrated to the areas around Gräsmark, "the Swede Finns". Here is a so-called smokehouse preserved and with attached Swedish cottage. In Asphagsstugan you can look into the big farmer who lived here in the 19th century. Take the opportunity to have a coffee in the café in the old beautiful courtyard - and if you are lucky there are cakes baked on custom flour. Here you can also taste Nävgröt - traditionally warmland. Hembygdsgården is open during the summer and the porridge is usually served on Fridays.

The tour continues on the southwest side of Lake Rottnen, which is a fault lake with sandbanks and coves. Take the opportunity to take a dip and enjoy the peace and quiet. Ski Sunne - a classic place for downhill skiing. Stop and take a strength pass for the legs. Do the opposite - get up the slopes and enjoy fabulous views of Värmland. Estimated cycle time about 3.5 hours excluding visits and breaks.

Maybe you stay an extra night, and end the day with a lovely manor dinner before it's time for a return trip? Warm welcome back to Värmland and Ulvsby Manor!

Even for an experienced cyclist, cycling time was not in line with reality. Almost a little unnecessary information that became misleading is enough with the distance

The description of the routes was not so understandable but with the help of gps it went well. Then it was a busier road than I had thought but it went well anyway. Very good food and friendly staff.

Lacked good map / directions, it was very difficult to find the right one. Luckily there were people to ask about the road. Lots to experience along the roads! Can compare with cycling in Halland, which had much better directions. Very nice accommodation, unfortunately inadequate shower with me. But very happy anyway!
