Cycle along Lake Vättern and in Tiveden and experience culture and nature from the saddle! During four days you will explore northern Vätterbygden and Tiveden with its beautiful nature, exciting history and interesting culture. The cycling adventure begins with a visit to Askersund with its small-town charm and goes via Stjernsund Castle to Olshammar with connections to both Verner von Heidenstam and Saint Birgitta. From here you continue into Tiveden's deep forests, with nature experiences such as Fagertärn's red water lilies, Tivedstorp's Finnish ancestry and of course the National Park's magnificent nature. Comfortable accommodation and good food give you a golden edge on your cycling adventure. You can also book luggage transport as an option.

Tip! You can start and/or end the tour directly at the train station in Hallsberg. Add 1-2 extra cycling days to be able to take the train to the adventure! The organizer will meet you with bicycles and other equipment when you arrive by train. There are several nice cycle paths and roads with little traffic to take you about 30 km by bike to Askersund. Price SEK 1,950 / extra night including food and accommodation. You can ride this tour on a regular women's bike, but there are also mountain bikes or electric mountain bikes to rent depending on what suits you best. Demand for accommodation is high during high season, so we recommend planning your cycling adventure for June and early July or August/September.

Day 1 - Askersund-Olshammar

hotelOlshammarsgården, Olshammar
directions_bike30 km

You start with a tour of Askersund, a charming town at the northern end of Lake Vättern. During the summer, the harbor is the obvious gathering place. Here you can stroll along the quay, buy an ice cream and visit the small stalls at the harbor square that sell local handicrafts. On the other side of the water you can see Stjernsund Castle, which is considered one of Sweden's most beautiful.

In the morning you pick up your bike and pedal off towards Stjernsund, about 7 kilometers. You cycle along the water on a cozy dirt road without car traffic, past green cow pastures. Arriving at the castle, you have the opportunity to join a guided tour and hear more about the history. Down by the water is the castle café where you have lunch. Here you can watch the boat traffic and enjoy the view towards Askersund. After lunch you continue cycling towards Olshammar which, apart from a short stretch on the R49, goes through rural idyll along smaller roads on gravel and asphalt.

Arriving in Olshammar, you check in at Olshammarsgården, where you also enjoy a lovely three-course dinner. Before dinner, you have the opportunity to look at Birgittakyrkan and take a walk down to the boat harbour. You can also visit Verner von Heidenstam's birth room at Olshammarsgården. He was born in the northeast gable room on the lower level and on one of the door panels you can see how his height, from age 4 to 21 is marked.

Day 2 - Olshammar-Tivedstorp

After a good breakfast (and maybe a morning dip in the cool water of Lake Vättern), you pack your lunch and cycle away. The tour goes via smaller roads towards Tiveden's large forest areas. After about 11 km you will arrive at Fagertärn nature reserve. Fagertärn is known for its unique red water lilies that bloom in July and August. The red color has arisen through a mutation and was discovered for the first time in 1856. Since 1905, water lilies have been protected. Regardless of whether the red water lilies bloom or not, it is beautiful to walk around Fagertärn. The path is 2.5 kilometers long and partly demanding, so you really get to experience Tiveden's dramatic nature. Here you can stop at one of the tables and enjoy your picnic lunch.

The cycle tour then continues along the monks' old pilgrimage trail, the Munkastigen, which goes from Riseberga monastery to Olshammar and from there on across Vättern and to Vadstena. If you ride a fat bike or mountain bike, you can choose to turn off onto the forest paths, but otherwise you continue along the dirt road and pass, among other things, the cave John's chamber. The cave is right next to the road. In the 19th century, cholera ravaged Tiveden and a man named Johannes took refuge here, which has now given the name to the cave. You also pass the old monk spring, but you should NOT drink the water in the spring...

From Bosjön you have about 10 km left to Tivedstorp. If you have extra energy, you can extend the tour and cycle up to Dammtorp's beautiful homestead. Once in place at Tivedstorp, you check into one of the charming houses and relax in the beautiful surroundings. In the evening, a well-deserved dinner is served.

Day 3 - Round trip with the smell of coffee in Tiveden's forests

Tiveden is Sweden's southernmost Finnish forest area and Tivedstorp's history goes back to the 17th century when Finnish settlers settled here to farm the land. The large and inaccessible forest areas have also been a haven for straw raiders and countless myths and legends have come to life here. Today you cycle through the enchanted forests, past mighty boulders and mirror-like lakes and ponds.

After breakfast, you pack your packed lunch and head the approx. 5 km towards the National Park. On the way you pass the steep cliffs of the Stigmans pass. In the past, those who passed through here were easy prey for straw robbers. Feel free to stop at the main entrance to the National Park and take advantage of the information available about plants and animals in the area. If you want to do a hike, Stenkällerundan is a nice and reasonably long trip.

From the main entrance, cycling continues along the Stora Trehörningen lake. You cycle on nice dirt roads, past Ösjönäs and on towards Sannerud by Lake Unden. After about 12 km you will arrive at Tived's church. Follow Byvägen to the center of Sannerud to Tivedens Kafferosteri. The roastery is run by Nina and Ralph who chose Tiveden as their home and who roast coffee with great passion and love. Take the opportunity to taste home-roasted coffee in a cozy and relaxing environment. Next door to the roastery is Tiveden's country store and the "forest restaurant" Luripompa. If there is room in your stomach, despite packed lunches and coffee, you can fill up the energy stores before cycling the last approx. 10 km back to Tivedstorp. You follow a paved road that slowly leads up and away from Lake Unden. You recognize the last bit from yesterday and soon you are back at Tivedstorp where you can rest a bit before it's time for tonight's dinner. A tip is to cycle just over 4 km one way for a lovely evening swim at Vitsand's beautiful sandy beach. Then you sleep well in comfortable beds.

Day 4 - Tivedstorp-Askersund

RestaurantBreakfast and picnic lunch
directions_bike40 km

It is time to leave Tivedstorp and continue cycling through Tiveden in the direction of Askersund. You cycle along lovely dirt roads, past small farms and villages and through nice forest areas. Along the way you pass small, nice lakes where you can stop and eat the packed lunch you brought.

About 10 km before Askersund, in Dohnafors, is Kullängsstugan. It is a building from the end of the 17th century that is a good example of how a well-to-do farmer could live at that time. From Kullängsstugan you continue the last bit back to Askersund. Maybe it's tempting to have an ice cream in the port after you've returned the bike?

Cancellation or change can be made no later than 15 days before arrival free of charge. Cancellation later or no-show will be charged the full amount.

The bicycle package is paid directly to the hotel on arrival.
