Cycle along the shores of Vättern and through Tiveden's forests, immersing yourself in the culture and nature of the region. Explore the beautiful landscapes, fascinating history, and intriguing culture of northern Vätterbygden and Tiveden over four days. The adventure begins with a visit to charming Askersund, leading to Stjernsunds Castle, and on to Olshammar. From there, continue deep into Tiveden's forests, where you'll experience the natural wonders of Fagertärn's red water lilies, Tivedstorp's Finnish roots, and, of course, the grandeur of the National Park. Enjoy comfortable accommodations and delicious meals during this unforgettable cycling experience. Baggage transport is available as an option.

This cycling package is also suitable to start and end directly at the train station in Hallsberg. The organizer will meet you at the station with bikes and equipment upon arrival. From Hallsberg to Askersund, it's about 30 km and there are several beautiful bike paths to choose from. For this arrangement, we recommend adding 1-2 extra nights depending on your train schedule. The price is 1,950 SEK per extra night, including meals and accommodation.

You can cycle this tour on a regular women's bike, but there are also mountain bikes or electric mountain bikes available for rent, depending on what suits you best.

Stjernsund Castle

You start your journey with a scenic tour of Askersund, a charming town located at the northern end of Lake Vättern. During the summer months, the harbor is the perfect meeting spot. Here, you can stroll along the waterfront, indulge in an ice cream, and browse the small booths at the harbor square selling local handicrafts. On the other side of the water, you'll see Stjernsund Castle, regarded as one of Sweden's most beautiful castles.

In the morning you cycle towards Stjernsund, approx. 7 km. You cycle along the water on a cozy dirt road without car traffic, past green cow pastures. Arriving at the castle, you have the opportunity to join a guided tour and hear more about the history. Down by the water is the castle café where you have lunch. Here you can watch the boat traffic and enjoy the view towards Askersund. After lunch you continue cycling towards Olshammar which, apart from a short stretch on the R49, goes through rural idyll along smaller roads on gravel and asphalt.

Upon arrival in Olshammar, you will check in at Olshammarsgården where you will indulge in a delightful three-course dinner. Prior to dinner, you have the opportunity to visit Birgitta Church and take a walk down to the harbor. You can also visit Verner von Heidenstam's birth room at Olshammarsgården where his height is marked on one of the door frames from the ages of 4 to 21.

John's Cave - Tiveden

After a delicious breakfast (and perhaps a morning dip in the cool waters of Lake Vättern), you pack your lunch and set off on your bike. The route takes you on smaller roads towards the vast forests of Tiveden. After approximately 11 km, you arrive at Fagertärn Nature Reserve. Fagertärn is known for its unique red water lilies that bloom in July and August. The red color is the result of a mutation, and the water lilies have been protected since 1905. Even if the red water lilies are not in bloom, it is still beautiful to explore the area around Fagertärn. The 2.5 km trail is partly demanding, but it offers an opportunity to truly experience the dramatic nature of Tiveden. You can stop at one of the picnic tables and enjoy your lunch.

Continuing the bike ride, you will follow the old pilgrimage trail of the monks, Munkastigen, which goes from Riseberga Monastery to Olshammar and further over Vättern to Vadstena. If you ride a fatbike or a mountain bike, you can choose to turn onto the forest trails, but otherwise you will continue along the gravel road and pass by landmarks such as Johannes' Chamber cave located right next to the road. During the 19th century, cholera ravaged Tiveden, and a man named Johannes sought refuge in the cave, which is how it got its name. You will also pass by the old monk's spring, but please do NOT drink the water from the spring...

From Bosjön you have about 10 km left to Tivedstorp. If you have extra energy, you can extend the trip and cycle up to Dammtorp's beautiful homestead. Once in place at Tivedstorp, you check into one of the cozy older houses with a slightly simpler standard and relax in the beautiful surroundings. In the evening, a well-deserved dinner is served at Tivedstorp, where the menu varies depending on the season and the availability of goods with a focus on vegetarianism.

Tivedstorp - Lake Unden

The Tiveden forest area, inhabited by Finnish settlers since the 1600s, is Sweden's southernmost. This vast and remote region has been a sanctuary for highway robbers and the inspiration for numerous myths and legends. Today, you can cycle through these enchanted woods, passing towering boulders and shimmering lakes and ponds.

After breakfast, you pack your lunch and head towards the National Park, which is approximately 5 km away. On the way, you pass the steep cliffs of Stigmanspasset, which in the past made travelers an easy target for highway robbers. At the main entrance to the National Park, take a moment to learn about the plants and animals that inhabit the area. If you feel like hiking, the Stenkällerundan trail is a beautiful and moderate length option.

From the main entrance, cycling continues along the Stora Trehörningen lake. You cycle on nice dirt roads, past Ösjönäs and on towards Sannerud by Lake Unden. After about 12 km you will arrive at Tived's church. Follow Byvägen to the center of Sannerud where you will find Tiveden's cafe. Here you can taste coffee from the local coffee roastery. Next door to the cafe
is Tiveden's country store and the "forest restaurant" Luripompa.
If there is room in your stomach, despite a packed lunch and coffee, you can replenish your energy reserves before cycling the last 10 km back to Tivedstorp. You follow a paved road that slowly leads up and away from Lake Unden. The last bit you recognize from yesterday and soon you are back at Tivedstorp where you can rest a little before it is time for the evening's dinner. Tivedstorp has a vegetarian focus on the menu. A tip is to cycle just over 4 km one way for a lovely evening dip at Vitsand's beautiful sandy beach. Then you sleep well in comfortable beds.

Dag 4 - Tivedstorp-Askersund

restaurantBreakfast and picnic lunch
directions_bike40 km

It's time to leave Tivedstorp and continue cycling through Tiveden towards Askersund. You'll ride on delightful gravel roads, past small farms and villages, and through beautiful forests. Along the way, you'll pass by small, lovely lakes where you can stop and enjoy your packed lunch.

After cycling through the beautiful forests and countryside for about 10 kilometers, you will reach Kullängsstugan in Dohnafors, an excellent example of a wealthy farmer's home from the late 1600s. From there, it's just a short distance to return to Askersund. Perhaps you'll feel like treating yourself to an ice cream at the harbor after returning your bike?

The payment for the cycling package is made directly to the organizer.

Cancellation or modification can be made at the latest by 15:00 the day before arrival free of charge. If canceled later or in case of no-show, the full amount will be charged.

Poor maps and directions, the food and accommodation, should inform about vegetarian, and showers and rooms not fresh.

Thank you for your feedback, I have been in contact with you by email and phone both before and after the trip.
I have conveyed your comments to Tivedstorp. We have clarified in the package that it is a cozy older accommodation with a simpler standard, as I informed you before departure...
This is also updated in the package that the food varies according to the season and availability of goods, with a focus on vegetarianism.
I am glad to hear that everything worked well at Olshammarsgården.
