Few places in Sweden have such an exciting and long history as Ekerö. Here, not far from Stockholm's city, crucial chapters in Sweden's history have been written for more than a thousand years.

A boat trip from Stockholm takes you across beautiful Lake Mälaren to Birka with its ancient history from the Viking Age. Continue your journey into the past when you cycle idyllic small roads on Adelsö past the atmospheric Hovgården. Stop for a dip on a secluded beach and climb the lookout tower to admire the expansive views of Lake Mälaren. Follow small roads and gravel roads on Munsö and Ekerö and pass views of the open landscape. Lovö is a cyclist's paradise and Drottningholm's castle is the perfect place to take a break from cycling and stroll through lovely gardens. A short boat trip back to Stockholm completes this eventful cycling adventure.

Please note that the price may be slightly higher on certain days (SEK 2,595 / person).

The terrain is slightly hilly and you cycle on a mixture of gravel road, small roads and some major roads, with or without a bike path. The package is designed to avoid the major roads where possible, but there are some stretches where they can not be avoided. Please note that you do not have the whole day to complete the cycling distance (especially day 1) due to the timetable from Stockholm to Birka. You start cycling on Adelsö at 13:45 after your visit to Birka and a short boat trip to Adelsö. Day 2, the last boat departs back to Stockholm at 17:00 from Drottningholm.

  • The journey can also start at Vårby or Jungfrusund.
  • To catch up with the bike ride to Skytteholm, we have calculated 1.5 hours at Birka.
Day 1

beautiful cycle path ekerö2

In the morning you take the boat from Stockholm over Lake Mälaren to Björkö, home to Birka Vikingstad with a museum and the mighty Ansgar Monument which is located high up on the hill with a view of the Vikings' waterways. You have an hour and a half to discover Birka, either visit the museum and take a guided tour, or take your bike and discover the island at your own pace. Then you take a private boat to Adelsö just a few minutes away.

Adelsö is an idyllic island for cycling with small roads that take you around the whole island. Stop at Hovgården, Birkas Kungsgård, and climb the lookout tower to admire the sweeping view of Lake Mälaren. It is also possible to swim in a secluded swimming area. The car ferry then takes you over to Munsö.

On Munsö you follow the smaller roads as much as possible through picturesque open landscapes and past Munsö church until you reach Skytteholm Hotell, an impressive mansion located right on the water with beautiful lake views. Here awaits dinner (not included in the price) and overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 2

munsö church2

In the morning you continue the bike ride on Ekerö past churches and beautiful views until you reach Lovö. Lovö is a lovely island on Stockholm's threshold and offers small roads perfect for cycling as well as hiking trails if you feel like a break from the bike saddle. You also pass the charming Lovö Magazine where you can take a break in the rustic surroundings and enjoy locally produced delicacies.

The bike ride around Lovö ends at Drottningholm Castle, the most well-preserved royal castle built in the 17th century in Sweden. The location by Lake Mälaren is wonderful and the gardens are perfect for an afternoon walk, a well-deserved end to your cycling adventure through Viking history and the beautiful landscape of the Mälaren Islands. The boat from Drottningholm takes you and your bike back to Stockholm.
