This stage of the Hjälmar Trail starts in Arboga. You cycle quickly on cycle paths away from the city and soon reach the historic Hjälmare Canal, where the trail crosses the old canal via a narrow wooden bridge. There is also a parking lot for motorhomes. You then continue along a scenic gravel road that follows the canal.
After about 16 km, the trail turns left onto a country road (70 road), which is followed for about 7 km before you again turn off on gravel roads and reach Alberga. Here you will find both an ICA Nära store and pizzeria for those who want a break. Do not miss the opportunity to make a detour of about 1 km to Stora Sundby castle - a historic landmark with medieval charm, castle café, farm shop and guided tours during summer. There is also a swimming area nearby for those who want to take a dip.
After Alberga there is a shorter path of about 1 km, wide and even but with some roots. The trail then continues on gravel roads before you approach Eskilstuna. Here you connect to cycle paths, pass Borsökna bathing place and continue cycling all the way to Eskilstuna central station, where the stage ends.
Hjälmarleden is under development. The municipalities are reviewing the route and preparing signage, and the route choices listed here are suggestions. Have you cycled the trail? Please share your tips and experiences here: https://ivlv.me/izy1F
