The stage is part of the Göta Canal cycle path and takes you south of Lake Viken, past Forsvik with its fantastic industrial history and north of Bottensjön to Karlsborg. Tiveden National Park is not far from here with 150 km of signposted cycle paths on roads and paths lined with magic forest and boulders. A cycling tip for those who want to stay a little longer in the area.
The story of Forsvik begins more than 600 years back in time. The town is known for being one of Sweden's oldest industrial areas. Today it is one of the pearls of the Göta Canal and offers a wide range of food, activities and accommodation options. Here is also the canal's oldest lock and Sweden's first iron bridge. Experience when the boats are locked with a drop of 3.5 meters while strolling around among Forsvik's cozy cafés.
In 1819, construction began Karlsborg Fortress - one of Europe's largest buildings. The purpose was that the city would act as Sweden's reserve capital in times of crisis and had room for both the Riksdag, the government and foreign exchange reserves. Today, you as a visitor can be guided through underground passages and experience historical environments. Unlike several other places along the Göta Canal, there is no lock in Karlsborg. Here, on the other hand, is the opening to the western part of the canal from Lake Vättern at the city's harbor. The mixture of cultural heritage, food experiences and natural environments make Karlsborg a must during the journey along the Göta Canal.
Visit Forsvik's mill and take part in industrial history or have an ice cream and watch the boats make their way through the Göta Canal's oldest lock.
The mighty fortress construction on Vanäs Udde began in 1819. The construction period was planned for 10 years, but it was 90 years. Today it is a fantastic destination that suits the whole family.
