This bike tour takes you from central Östersund out on Frösön's winding roads, through beautiful nature and exciting cultural environments. Starting in Badhusparken on the shores of Lake Storsjön, the tour crosses the footbridge to Frösön and continues through historic sites, art experiences, viewpoints and charming cafés.

Each stop offers something unique - from rune stones and ancient castles to bird lakes and music history. Discover Jämtland's only rune stone, have a coffee with a view of Oviksfjällen, visit art exhibitions and walk short trails to ancient monuments or bird towers. The tour is suitable for both experienced cyclists and families, and there are plenty of opportunities to stop, enjoy and explore at your own pace.

    Bathhouse Park

    Badhusparken is beautifully situated on the shores of Lake Storsjön, in the center of Östersund. With open grass areas, playgrounds and walkways, it is a popular place all year round. The park is also a starting point for this bike ride. From here you can easily reach the footbridge to Frösön, Surfbukten and further out into Jämtland's nature and mountain world.

    Surf bays

    In the middle of Östersund lies Surfbukten - a lively place for both activity and relaxation. Go wakeboarding, test your balance on the slackline, play beach volleyball or jump on the trampoline. Or just sit back in a deck chair and enjoy the view. Coffee is of course also available!

    Sweden's northernmost rune stone

    This is Jämtland's only known rune stone (ca 1030-1050 AD). The stone has been interpreted as a sign of Jämtland's independence, and the snake on the stone is said by some to represent the Great Lake Beast. The inscription reads: "Östman Gudfast's son had this stone erected and this bridge made, and he had Jämtland Christianized..."

    Milky Way

    Mjällestigen is a hike through beautiful nature and exciting history. The trail passes Viking graves, ancient remains and an ancient castle. From Öneberget you are offered magnificent views of the landscape.

    Stengårdsstigen

    The 3 km long Stengårdsstigen trail takes you through Frösön's history - from the Iron Age remains to recent centuries. Along the way there are signs that tell about the rich cultural heritage of the place. Start at Frösö Camping, where there is also an information board.

    Frösövallen

    Frösövallen is a charming summer café and hostel on Frösön, right next to Frösö church. Here you can enjoy homemade coffee and waffles with a fantastic view of Oviksfjällen. From the viewing tower or the sunny terrace, the mountain world spreads out in all its glory. A perfect place for coffee with a mountain view.

    Frösö church

    Frösö Church offers one of Jämtland's most beautiful views - of Lake Storsjön, the landscape and the mountains on the horizon. This is not only a place of tranquillity and reflection, but also a living part of history. The church has its roots in the Middle Ages and is located along the St. Olavsleden, the world's northernmost pilgrimage route.

    Café Stocke Titt

    At the top of Frösöberget, in the old captain's dwelling at Frösö hembygdsgård, is Café Stocke Titt - a charming café with magical views of Storsjön and the mountain world. Here, history, nature and tasty coffee meet in a unique environment. Outside, the viewing tower awaits those who want to see even further, and for the younger ones there is a balance and obstacle course that attracts play and movement.

    Härke art

    On the western side of Frösön is Härke Konstcentrum - a meeting place for art, creativity and coffee. Here, art exhibitions by both local and international artists are shown, and during the summer there is a café where you can enjoy homemade cakes in an artistic environment. Perfect for an inspiring break overlooking Lake Storsjön and the mountains.

    The summer garden

    With miles of views of Lake Storsjön and the mountains lies Sommarhagen - Wilhelm Peterson-Berger's artist home from 1914. Here he created works such as Sommarsång and Vid Frösö kyrka. Today, the house is a museum, filled with history and national romanticism. In summer, concerts are held in the music hall, and 2025 offers world premieres and classical elements. On the ground floor, Café Sommarhagen serves lunch, homemade coffee - and unforgettable views.

    The front path of the church

    The 1.3 km long Kyrkstigens fornstig trail runs between Sommarhagen and Frösö church. Along the trail you will learn about Frösö church and the history of the Hov farm, which stretches back over 1000 years. A short but rich hike in a historic environment.

    Ändsjön nature reserve

    Ändsjön is Frösön's only lake and a beautiful nature reserve with over 40 breeding bird species, including black-necked grebe and crane. An approximately 3 km long path leads around the lake with bird towers along the way, one of which is accessible.

Good to know

This bike tour is easy to ride and does not require any specific prior knowledge. You cycle mostly (approx. 90%) on asphalt.

There are free ferries from Håkansta to Norderön and from Norderön to Isön, which in turn has a bridge connection with Andersön.

Getting Here

You can travel to Östersund by train or bus. You can bring your bike on Inlandsbanan (pre-booking required) as well as on the regional train Norrtåg (max 4 bikes per carriage). On SJ trains, the bike must be folded and must not exceed the dimensions 140x85x30 cm or weigh more than 25 kg.
